Abstract:
Porous articles are provided that include a fibrous porous matrix and porous polymeric particles. The porous polymeric particles are distributed throughout the fibrous porous polymeric matrix. The porous article can be used to prepare a separation device or a system that includes the separation device. The porous articles can be used for the separation of a target material such as a microorganism (i.e., cellular analyte) from a sample.
Abstract:
Kits and systems for isolating microorganisms from a sample, the sample including sample matrix and microorganisms, the kit including concentration agent; and a system for isolating microorganisms from a sample.
Abstract:
Guanidine-functionalized particles and methods of making and using such particles are provided, such as guanidine-functionalized metal silicate particles. A nonwoven article is also provided including a porous fibrous nonwoven matrix and guanidine-functionalized metal silicate particles enmeshed within the porous fibrous nonwoven matrix. The nonwoven article may be used, for instance, for removing microorganisms from an aqueous sample by contacting a fluid sample with the nonwoven article such that at least a portion of the microorganisms are removed from the fluid sample.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides a monitoring device comprising a test composition, a test element comprising a test portion to which the test composition is releasably adhered, a detection reagent, and a container comprising a first end with an opening and a second end opposite the first end. The test composition comprises a predetermined quantity of tracer analyte. The container is configured to receive the test portion and configured to be operationally coupled to an analytical instrument. The tracer analyte and the detection reagent each are capable of participating in one or more chemical reaction that results in the formation of a detectable product. A method of using the monitoring device to assess the efficacy of a washing process is also provided.
Abstract:
A process for capturing or concentrating microorganisms for detection or assay comprises (a) providing a concentration device comprising a sintered porous polymer matrix comprising at least one concentration agent that comprises diatomaceous earth bearing, on at least a portion of its surface, a surface treatment comprising a surface modifier comprising ferric oxide, titanium dioxide, fine-nanoscale gold or platinum, or a combination thereof; (b) providing a sample comprising at least one microorganism strain; and (c) contacting the concentration device with the sample such that at least a portion of the at least one microorganism strain is bound to or captured by the concentration device.
Abstract:
Methods of detecting microorganisms in a fluid sample are provided. The method includes providing a nonwoven article, providing a fluid sample suspected of containing at least one microorganism strain or target cellular analyte, and contacting the fluid sample with the nonwoven article such that at least a portion of the at least one microorganism strain or target cellular analyte is bound to the nonwoven article. The nonwoven article includes a fibrous porous matrix and a concentration agent particles enmeshed in the fibrous porous matrix. The method further includes placing the microorganism strain- or target cellular analyte-bound nonwoven article in contact with at least one detection reagent and detecting the presence of the bound microorganism strain or bound target cellular analyte. Devices and kits containing the devices, for contacting a fluid sample with a nonwoven article, are also provided. The device includes a sample container, a filter holder, a nonwoven article, and an adaptor configured to interface the filter holder with a receptacle.
Abstract:
Devices for detecting microorganism strains or target cellular analytes are provided. The device includes a filter holder, the filter holder comprising a tip portion; a nonwoven article disposed on the tip portion of the filter holder; and an adaptor attacked to the filter holder, the adaptor defining an aperture. Methods of detecting microorganisms and/or cellular analytes in a fluid sample using the devices are also provided. The method includes obtaining the device; placing a lumened or cannulated device in fluid communication with the device; and passing a fluid sample suspected of containing at least one microorganism strain or target cellular analyte from the lumened or cannulated device through the device and contacting the nonwoven article. The method further includes contacting the nonwoven article with at least one detection reagent and detecting the presence of the at least one microorganism strain or target cellular analyte concentrated by the nonwoven article. Kits and systems including the devices are also provided.
