A gear shift control system for an automatic transmission comprises an air flow sensor for sensing the quantity of air taken into an internal combustion engine and supplying a corresponding electrical signal to a differentiator which provides a derivative of the sensed intake air quantity. A vehicle speed sensor senses the speed of rotation of the engine crankshaft to generate a corresponding signal. A gear shift decision circuit is receptive of signals from the air flow sensor and vehicle speed sensor to define a gear shift control line on a two-dimensional coordinate system as a function of the received input signals on respective coordinate axes. The derivative of the sensed air quantity is used to shift the gear shift control line to a higher speed side of the coordinate system to permit the transmission to effect downshift operation.

A method and an apparatus for controlling the reduction ratio of a continuously variable transmission are disclosed wherein when an actual engine coolant temperature indicative signal is greater than or equal to a predetermined value indicative signal, a desired optimum reduction ratio signal is obtained by retrieving the desired optimum reduction ratio signal data stored in a memory versus an engine load and a vehicle speed. When the actual engine coolant temperature indicative signal is less than the predetermined value indicatiive signal, the same desired optimum reduction ratio signal data are retrieved based on a corrected signal which is obtained by correcting an engine load indicative signal or a vehicle speed indicative signal in order to provide a larger reduction ratio. Alternatively, another optimum reduction ratio signal data are retrieved when the actual engine coolant temperature indicative signal is less than the predetermined value indicative signal.

In a fuel cut-off control system in a fuel injection internal combustion engine with an automatic transmission, the fuel cut-off control system is responsive to a brake switch signal and an engine speed signal having a value above a fuel recovery threshold to decrease the value of a fuel cut-off threshold to again perform the fuel cut-off even in the normal fuel recovery range. Down shifting of a transmission gear is performed to increase engine speed to a level beyond the fuel cut-off threshold to prolong the fuel cut-off period.
