Abstract:
Diffractive pigment flakes are selectively aligned to form an image. In one embodiment, flakes having a magnetic layer are shaped to facilitate alignment in a magnetic field. In another embodiment, the flakes include a magnetically discontinuous layer. In a particular embodiment, deposition of nickel on a diffraction grating pattern produces magnetic needles along the grating pattern that allow magnetic alignment of the resulting diffractive pigment flakes. Color scans of test samples of magnetically aligned flakes show high differentiation between illumination parallel and perpendicular to the direction of alignment of the magnetic diffractive pigment flakes.
Abstract:
The present invention describes a process by which a coating which has dirt- and water-repellant properties can be applied non-permanently to any article. It is usual nowadays for articles to be provided with self-cleaning properties by generating, on the surface of the article, a surface structure made from elevations and depressions which have to have a certain height and a certain separation. This is usually achieved by impressing such structures, or by securing structure-forming particles by means of a carrier system. In this way the surfaces are provided with a permanent self-cleaning surface. If scratching, discoloration, or some other type of damage causes impairment of the surface or surface structure, this cannot be simply removed and reapplied, but instead the article then has to be retreated, freed from the surface structure by a complicated method, or disposed of. In contrast, the inventive coating can be removed again from the articles by relatively simple mechanical means. The inventive coating is also simple to produce, by applying a suspension of an alcohol and structure-imparting particles to the article.
Abstract:
An aqueous polymer blend composition containing particles of a first polymer and particles of a second polymer with preferred molecular weight ranges is provided. Coatings prepared from the aqueous polymer blend composition may be employed as coatings which have water whitening resistance and provide resistance to efflorescence to cementitious substrates, such as roof tiles. A method of preparing a coated cementitious substrate with the aqueous polymer blend composition and an article containing the coated cementitious substrate are also provided.
Abstract:
A coating composition comprising a relatively low alkali-containing colloidal silica and glossy ink jet recording sheets prepared from such coatings is described. The coating comprises binder and colloidal silica, e.g., having an average particle size in the range of about 1 to about 300 nanometers. The low alkali colloidal silica of this invention comprises ammonia, polydispersed colloidal silica, or both. Polydispersed silicas having a particle size distribution such that the median particle size is in the range of 15 to 100 nanometers and 80% of the particles span a range of at least about 30 to about 70 nanometers are preferred. It has been discovered that coatings prepared from such colloidal silica and applied to conventional ink jet recording sheet supports have a specular gloss of at least 30 at 60° C., and excellent printability at silica solids to binder solids ratio of 1:1 or greater.
Abstract:
A coating, such as ink or paint, is used, where particles in the coating are selected based on electric, magnetic, or light/photo properties, and are dispersed in the coating to provide a desired physical color. In one approach, the application of the coating to the substrate such as paper is controlled using an electric or magnetic field. In another approach, a pattern is formed in a coating on a substrate by targeting an electric, magnetic or photo field to specific locations on the coating. In yet another approach, the color of a coating that is applied to an object is shifted to match a background color so that the coating appears to be erased. In this approach, the coating may be in the form of a label, such as a bar code, that can be read by a scanner at a point of sale location. In another approach a pattern or code is scrambled or removed by applying an electric, magnetic, or photo field to specific locations on the coating or substrate.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of coating substrates with at least two coatings, wherein the same polymer or resin basecoat is employed in both of the two coatings. The first coating layer also includes an adhesion promoter, thereby eliminating a primer layer. Further, the present invention provides an automated or continuous coating line or coating system including a series of coating booths, each for applying one of a series waterborne or solvent borne coatings, wherein at least the first and second booth each comprises an applicator device and feed or supply controller for feeding a desired amount of the same basecoat formulation to an applicator device, and, further wherein the first booth comprises a feed or supply controller for feeding a desired amount of an adhesion promoter to the at least one applicator device. The coating line or system enables the continuous formation of primeness multi-layer coatings, e.g. basecoat, colorcoat and clearcoat on automotive plastic substrates, from a single paint composition, mixing in color or adhesion components as needed in each booth.
