Abstract: An electric vehicle, system and method of charge transfer at the electric vehicle. The vehicle includes a charging circuit and a processor. The charging circuit includes a first battery, a second battery and a motor winding. The processor determines a desired reference current of the motor winding, a first voltage of the first battery and a second voltage of the second battery, calculates a power loss for each of a plurality of conduction modes based on the desired reference current, the first voltage and the second voltage, wherein each of the plurality of conduction modes transfers charge between the first battery and the second battery, selects a conduction mode from the plurality of conduction modes that has a least power loss, establishes a duty cycle parameter for the selected mode, and applies the conduction mode and the duty cycle parameter to the charging circuit to transfer the charge.

Abstract: A power control system for an electric vehicle comprises N power inverters configured to connect to a battery system of the electric vehicle. Each of the N power inverters includes a plurality of power switches, where N is an integer greater than one. The N power inverters are configured to connect to stator phase windings of N electric machines, respectively. A controller is configured to determine a switching frequency for the N electric machines and (N−1) phase offsets for (N−1) ones of the N electric machines, generate a set of pulse width modulation (PWM) switching signals at the switching frequency for a first one of the N power inverters, and output (N−1) sets of PWM switching signals to the (N−1) ones of the N electric machines based on the set of PWM switching signals and the (N−1) phase offsets.

An exemplary power module can include a direct bond copper (DBC) substrate having a top copper layer, a bottom copper layer, and a dielectric layer between the top copper layer and the bottom copper layer. The power module includes a thin-film thermoelectric cooler (TFTEC) having a thermoelectric film positioned between a top insulator and a bottom insulator. One or more dies are positioned over the DBC substrate and the TFTEC and a controller is configured to adjust a thermoelectric device current of the TFTEC responsive to a temperature of the one or more dies.

Abstract: A device for thermal control of a battery system includes a heating control module configured to generate an alternating current (AC) heating current and heat the battery system to a desired temperature by applying the AC heating current to the battery system over a selected heating time duration. The heating control module is configured to monitor a rate of increase of a temperature of the battery system during the applying, during the heating time duration, perform a periodic impedance measurement, the periodic impedance measurement including application of a measurement signal having a selected frequency range to the battery system for a measurement period, a length of the measurement period select to minimize a difference between a desired rate of increase and the monitored rate of increase, and adjust the AC heating current during the applying based on the temperature and the impedance measurement.

Abstract: A system for use with a direct current fast-charging (DCFC) station includes a controller and battery system. The battery system includes first and second battery packs, and first, second, and third switches. The switches have ON/OFF conductive states commanded by the controller to connect the battery packs in a parallel-connected (P-connected) or series-connected (S-connected) configuration. An electric powertrain with one or more electric machines is powered via the battery system. First and second charge ports of the system are connectable to the station via a corresponding charging cable. The first charge port receives a low or high charging voltage from the station. The second charge port receives a low charging voltage. When the station can supply the high charging voltage to the first charge port, the controller establishes the S-connected configuration via the switches, and thereafter charges the battery system solely via the first charge port.
