A method for making a thermoplastic material includes: (a) partially crosslinking an elastomer composition at a first crosslinking temperature to form a thermoplastic, partially crosslinked elastomer composition; (b) mixing a thermoplastic polymer composition with the thermoplastic, partially crosslinked elastomer composition and heating the mixture to a second crosslinking temperature higher than the first crosslinking temperature, wherein the thermoplastic polymer composition is liquid at the second crosslinking temperature; and (c) continuously mixing the mixture while further crosslinking the elastomer composition to form a thermoplastic material having a dispersed phase of crosslinked elastomer composition in the thermoplastic polymer composition. The elastomer composition may include an elastomer compounded with a curing agent and optionally additional components. A thermoplastic material resulting from this process may be molded or shaped by any method used for forming thermoplastic materials into articles, such as molding, extrusion, or thermoforming.

The present invention provides novel biolatex conjugate compositions and methods of production and use thereof. The novel biolatex conjugate compositions comprise a biopolymer-additive complex (prepared by co-extruding a biopolymer feedstock, at least one performance-enhancing additive, and at least one plasticizer under shear forces) reacted with a crosslinking agent under shear forces. The biolatex conjugate compositions exhibit enhanced performance properties for coated paper, paperboard, and other applications using extremely low levels of performance-enhancing additives.

Method and systems for online analysis of a polymeric material within a mixing device are provided. In certain embodiments, the methods and systems subject the polymeric material to Raman spectroscopy analysis. The Raman spectroscopy provides analysis of polymer properties that may include melt index, density, viscosity, molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, weight ratios of different polymers comprising the polymeric material, additive concentrations, crosslinking agent concentrations, scissoring agent concentrations, and combinations thereof. The spectroscopy results can be used to provide process control to adjust operating parameters of the mixing device and/or an associated polymerization process. The mixing device may be an extruder. The methods and systems may also include a processor for evaluating the results of the Raman analysis and automatically adjusting the mixing device and/or polymerization processes.

The invention is a method for operating an extruder temperature controller. The method can include sensing an actual screw speed for an extruder screw in an extruder barrel. The extruder barrel has at least one heat exchange means. The method can then involve indexing and storing a plurality of screw speeds. Each of the stored screw speeds corresponds to a temperature reset value. Comparing the actual screw speed with each of the stored screw speeds can then be performed. Selecting one of the stored screw speeds can then occur. The selected screw speed is a member of the plurality of stored screw speeds having a value most arithmetically equivalent to the actual screw speed. The step of selecting retrieves the temperature reset value corresponding to the selected, stored screw speed. Generating a control output driver signal to the heat exchange means can occur. The control output driver signal is responsive to the retrieved temperature reset value. The invention includes delaying a control alarm for a predetermined time when generating a control output driver signal to the heat exchange means is at or near maximum capacity.

A novel apparatus has been discovered which is of value in the production of polyurethane foam. This invention relates to a one-pass, on-demand apparatus for producing a controlled, homogeneous blend of the polyol-blowing agent mixture used in the manufacture of polyurethane foam using either a low-boiling point or high-boiling point blowing agent. An apparatus is provided to control the amount of each material in the mixture, ensure homogeneous blending of the two materials after mixing, a pressure control means to maintain blowing agents in their liquid state (where necessary), and a monitoring means which allows rapid verification of the operating status of the entire system.
