The invention is a composition for coating surfaces with a thin film containing fluoropolymer particles, a method for producing this composition, as well as a method for applying it to a surface. More particularly, the composition includes a carrier lubricant, such as mineral oil, which has particles of a fluoropolymer, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, well dispersed within it. A solvent, such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane, is blended with the fluoropolymer containing carrier lubricant, most preferably in a one to one ratio. The result is a low viscosity dispersion of the carrier lubricant, which itself has a dispersion of the fluoropolymer particles. When the composition is applied to a surface, the lowered viscosity aids in obtaining a thinner film of the lubricant and also enhances the penetration of the lubricant into the surface. Advantageously, the solvent is allowed to evaporate from the surface, thus leaving an even thinner film of the lubricant. Also, the evaporation of the solvent returns the lubricant to a higher viscosity which is better retained on the surface. Preferably, the lubricant also contains a phosphate ester, such as tricresyl phosphate, which is thought to aid in dispersing the fluoropolymer particles in the lubricant, and in attaching the fluoropolymer particles to the surface.

More particularly, the composition includes a carrier medium, such as a synthetic base stock, which has particles of a fluoropolymer, such as ground and sintered polytetrafluoroethylene, well dispersed within it. A solvent, such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane, is blended with the fluoropolymer containing carrier medium, most preferably in either a 32 to 1 ratio or an 8 to 1 ratio. The result is a low viscosity dispersion of the carrier medium, which itself has a dispersion of the fluoropolymer particles. When the composition is applied to a surface, the lowered viscosity aids in obtaining a thinner film of the grease and also enhances the penetration of the fluoropolymer particles into the surface. Advantageously, the solvent is allowed to evaporate from the surface, thus leaving an even thinner film of the grease. Also, the evaporation of the solvent returns the grease to a higher viscosity which is better retained on the surface. Preferably, the grease also contains a phosphate ester, such as tricresyl phosphate, which is thought to aid in dispersing the fluoropolymer particles in the grease, and in attaching the fluoropolymer particles to the surface.

[Also in Group III] An hydraulic fluid comprises a major proportion of an oleaginous liquid ester and minor proportions of an epoxy compound and of an aryl amine containing a plurality of amino-aryl linkages. The epoxy compounds may contain one or more epoxy groups, and may be polymers containing epoxy groups. The arylamines may be diamino diarylalkanes, thiodiarylamines, diarylamines or alkylated phenylene diamines. The oleaginous liquid ester may be an ester of an acid of phosphorus, such as phosphates, phosphonates, phosphinates, diphosphorus compounds and ethers of diphosphorus compounds; an ester of silicic acid; or an ester of a carboxylic acid, such as an ester of mono or polyhydric alcohol with a mono or polybasic acid; or an ester of a silicic, phosphorus or dicarboxylic acid with thia-alcohols or thio-alcohols. An uninflammable insulating liquid is obtained by adding an emulsifying agent having a volume ratio of 1 to 3% to an insulating liquid containing a fluorocarbon liquid of at least 25% in a volume ratio to cause emulsification. In this liquid mixture, when polyol ester or polydimethylsiloxane is used as the insulating liquid, an uninflammable insulating liquid that does not cause pollution or an environmental problem can be obtained. When tricresyl phosphate is used as the insulating liquid, an uninflammable insulating liquid having a dielectric constant close to that of insulating paper can be obtained. A liquid pipe for circulating a fluorocarbon emulsion in a tank is provided outside the tank, and a pump and a stirrer are connected midway along the liquid pipe to constantly stir the fluorocarbon emulsion, thereby preventing it from being separated into two layers. When a radiator is provided to the liquid pipe, the stirring system for the fluorocarbon emulsion can also serve as the cooling system.

A composition for lubricating a metal workpiece prior to cold forming consists essentially of: an aqueous alkaline stearate compound present in an amount sufficient to impart metal lubrication between about 180.degree. F. and about 320.degree. F.; an aqueous alkaline palmitate compound present in an amount sufficient to impart metal lubrication below about 160.degree. F.; an aqueous metallic stearate compound present in an amount sufficient to impart metal lubrication between about 320.degree. F. and 440.degree. F.; a polymeric glycol present in an amount sufficient to provide temperature stability, act as a carrier for the aqueous compounds, and impart a waxy lubrication to the metal; a compound present in an amount sufficient to act as a carrier for the aqueous compounds and to provide a translucent film barrier on the metal; an alkaline buffering agent present in an amount sufficient to provide dispersion, viscosity and stability; a hydrotropic agent present in an amount sufficient to solubilize the lubricating composition. A process is disclosed for lubricating a metal workpiece outer surface prior to cold forming, the process comprising the step of disposing a non-reactive lubricating composition on the workpiece outer surface, the outer surface having been alkaline cleaned, hot water rinsed, acid pickled, and cold water rinsed.
