Abstract: A method for rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing by tracking sub-micron scale motion of single bacterial cells including obtaining a biological sample from a subject including live bacteria. Different doses of antibiotic are added to a multi-well glass slide and adding portions of the biological sample to the wells. Bacterial cells are tethered onto the surface. The tethered bacterial cells are imaged and tracked. Bacterial sub-micron motion of tethered cells is measured at the different doses. A processor performs statistical analysis on a population of cells for each antibiotic dose to generate an antibiotic dose curve proportional to the motion changes, where the antibiotic dose curve plots data including a decrease in movement over time indicating a proportional effectiveness of an antibiotic applied to a well.

Abstract: A device and method for carbon dioxide capture using circumscribed hollow membranes is disclosed. The device includes a hollow membrane unit having an inner conduit composed of a vapor membrane, and an outer conduit having an inside surface circumscribing the inner conduit forming a lumen. The outer conduit includes a CO2 pump membrane. The device also includes a mechanical pump maintaining a pressure differential between the lumen and the atmosphere, providing a product stream of CO2-rich gas from the lumen. The vapor membrane is sufficiently hydrophobic and porous to contain liquid water while also allowing water vapor formed by evaporation to pass through into the lumen. As water vapor passes from the lumen to the atmosphere through the CO2 pump membrane, a carbon concentration gradient is formed and maintained across the CO2 pump membrane. The carbon concentration gradient actively pumps CO2 out of the atmosphere and into the lumen.

Abstract: Assays, arrays, and methods for distinguishing a bacterial infection from a viral infection are disclosed. The antibiotic crisis is in part driven by over prescription of antibiotics. There is a tendency, particular in pediatrics, to give an antibiotic even for viral infections. Thus, embodiments herein are directed to the problem of distinguishing a bacterial infection from a viral infection to reduce unnecessary antibiotic usage.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a non-invasive intraoral neurostimulation device and method for treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) while improving adherence, effectiveness, and outcomes. The intraoral neurostimulation device includes a mouthpiece, at least one electrode pair having a reference electrode and a stimulating electrode supported by the mouthpiece, and a substrate positioned between a tongue of a user and the stimulating electrode. The intraoral neurostimulation device is configured to deliver non-invasive electrical neurostimulation to the motor neurons of at least one genioglossus muscle to induce a muscle contraction of the tongue, thereby eliminating the blockage and returning normal airflow to the user. In certain embodiments, the intraoral neurostimulation device is paired with a respiratory sensor to deliver stimulation synchronized with the respiratory rhythm of the user or deliver stimulation only during apneic episodes, reducing the total amount of stimulation time.
