Abstract:
An inertia switch capable of detecting the arrival of stress waves from any direction in the plane of the mounting surface is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of conductive spheres are held in a plurality of corresponding recesses by spring arms. A pair of interconnected conductors on each recess surface form, with the conductive spheres, an electrical circuit which is broken if any of the spheres is moved outwardly of its recess against the spring by any impact or stress wave in the structure. Provisions are included for adjusting the switch sensitivity by adjusting the spring preload on the spheres.
Abstract:
A receiver totally implanted within a living body is inductively coupled by two associated receiving coils to a physically unattached external transmitter which transmits two signals of different frequencies to the receiver via two associated transmitting coils. One of the signals from the transmitter provides the implanted receiver with precise control or stimulating signals which are demodulated and processed in a signal processor network in the receiver and then used by the body for stimulation of a nerve, for example, while the other signal provides the receiver with a continuous wave power signal which is rectified in the receiver to provide a source of electrical operating power for the receiver circuitry without need for an implanted battery.
Abstract:
AN INSULATION MATERIAL COMPRISING A THERMAL HEAT REFLECTING MATERIAL SUCH AS ALUMINIZED POLYESTER FILM, VIZ, MYLAR, PROVIDED WITH A MULTIPLICITY OF FIBER TUFTS OF FLOCKING MATERIAL SPACED APART AND BONDED TO THE MYLAR IN A SUBSTANTIALLY POLKA-DOT PATTERN. THE UPSTANDING FIBER BRISTLES SERVE TO SPACE THE REFLECTING MATERIAL AWAY FROM ADJACENT STRUCTURE OR OTHER ADJACENT LAYERS OF INSULATION. HEAT TRANSFER BY CONDUCTION IS REDUCED TO A MINIMUM AS A RESULT OF THE TUFTS OF BRISTLES BEING IN POINT CONTACT ONLY WITH ADJACENT MATERIAL AND STRUCTURE.
Abstract:
A method of using a measuring and locating system utilizing a novel surface plate and fixtures associated therewith is disclosed. Basically, a plurality of uniform recesses are formed in a surface. At least one ferromagnetic member having an exterior shape corresponding to the shape of the recesses is placed in a recess and secured to a measuring and/or locating fixture. Magnetic attraction means are provided adjacent to recesses to aid in holding ferromagnetic members in place. The fixture may be easily removed by overcoming the magnetic attraction forces and replaced in exactly the same position. This method is useful for dimensional measurement of workpieces, locating workpieces for automatic machining operations, etc.
Abstract:
A MULTI-LAYER PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD FOR USE IN MICROWAVE FREQUENCY CIRCUITS IS DESCRIBED. THE BOARD HAS AT LEAST A PAIR OF PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS HAVING POLYTETRAFLUORETHYLENE SUBSTRATES, ONE OF WHICH IS SINGLE SIDED AND THE OTHER OF WHICH IS DOUBLE SIDED. ONE CIRCUIT OF THE DOUBLE SIDED BOARD PROVIDES AN INTERNAL LAYER OF THE MULTI-LAYER BOARD. THE OUTER LAYERS FORM GROUND PLANES SUCH THAT STRIPLINE
CIRCUITS ARE PROVIDED FOR CONNECTION TO MICROWAVE CIRCUIT COMPONENTS. THE PROCESS INCLUDES STEPS FOR LAMINATING THE BOARDS TOGETHER PROVIDING PLATED THROUGH HOLES WHICH PERMIT POLYETRAFLUORETHYLENE TO BE USED IN A MANNER COMPATIBLE WITH MICROWAVE CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS.

Microwave phase shifters and electronic beam steering antennas are described which use an electrically controllable anisotropy dielectric medium in the microwave beam path.
Abstract:
A system of storing digital data on multitrack magnetic records (tape or disc) with extremely high-packing density is described. The input data is encoded into unique four-tert, trilevel zero average format words. Because of the zero average property of the words, an alphabet of 18 zero average words is possible. A parity generator operative on a modulo 18 basis forms a parity word from the input data. This parity word is selected from the available alphabet of ternary words and is recorded in ternary form on one of the tracks in parallel with the ternary words for which it forms a parity check. On playback, the words are decoded and outputs are obtained indicating whether or not the words in each track are valid or invalid. A corrected word generator operative on a modulo 18 basis derives the corrected word and logic is provided for substituting a corrected word for the one of the playback data words which is indicated as being invalid.
Abstract:
A VALVE TOOL FOR REMOVING AND INSTALLING THE CAP PORTION OF A FITTING ATTACHED TO A CONTAINER OR VACUUM SYSTEM WHILE THE CONTAINER OR SYSTEM IS BEING EVACUATED. THE BELL-SHAPED BODY OF THE VALVE POSITIONS OVER THE PUMPDOWN FITTING DURING VACUUM PUMPING THEREOF. A SOCKET WRENCH ENCLOSED WITHIN THE VALVE BODY ENGAGES THE CAP PORTION OF THE FITTING FOR INSTALLATION OR REMOVAL THEREOF BY MANUAL OPERATION OF A HANDLE OUTSIDE OF THE VALVE BODY. A SHAFT EXTENDING THROUGH A SEAL IN THE VALVE BODY, CONNECTS THE SOCKET WRENCH TO THE HANDLE. A PORT LOCATED IN THE VALVE BODY PROVIDES PASSAGE MEANS FOR EVACUATING GASES FROM THE SYSTEM OR CONTAINER.
Abstract:
This invention relates to an expandable truss paraboloidal antenna structure in which the truss structure of the reflector comprises hinged struts that form interconnecting, hinged, triangular truss modules that are aligned in two geometric planes with the struts terminating at junctions on the inner and outer surfaces of the paraboloidal shaped structure. The combination of hinge struts is packaged in a compact unit and then is deployed by being automatically unfolded outwardly by spring means in certain of the hinges.
Abstract:
A system for storage on a magnetic record medium (tape or disc) of data with an extremely high packing density is described. Binary input information is encoded into a ternary signal for recording. That ternary signal has spectral properties which facilitate recording with extremely high bit packing density. The ternary signal also contains timing information. On playback the signal is decoded into binary-coded ternary form. Timing information with respect to words of ternary data, as well as the individual terts which make up the words, is also derived. The system includes means for synchronizing the reproduced data in accordance with the timing information derived from the data itself, as well as with an external clock, and decodes the data into the original binary form.
