Abstract: When an abnormality determining process is cancelled when a fuel cut is stopped, an EGR valve (33), which is open wider than normal from the process, is returned to its original opening amount (i.e., fully closed), and fuel injection in an engine (1) is resumed. However, during execution of the abnormality determining process, an EGR passage (32) is full of air. Also, when the EGR valve (33) is returned to the fully closed state, there is a response delay in the change in the flowrate of air that flows from the EGR passage (32) into the air passage (4) following that return, such that excess air flows into the air passage (4). As a result, the intake air amount of the engine (1) becomes excessive for the fuel injection quantity after fuel injection resumes. The fuel injection quantity is thus increase corrected to inhibit this from happening.

Abstract: A controller restricts an operation amount of the variable valve actuation mechanism of a fluid pressure operated type such that increase in the valve overlap amount of an engine is restrained when the engine is in a transient operation state in which the output of the engine increases. When the controller determines that the variable valve actuation mechanism is in the locked state, the controller relaxes the restriction imposed on the operation amount of the variable valve actuation mechanism. Hence, a decrease in follow-up performance of valve properties to desired properties is restrained while restraining temporary stagnation of increase in engine rotational speed caused by vehicle acceleration.

Abstract: An engine cooling system includes a flow control valve and an electronic control unit (ECU) for controlling the flow control valve. The flow control valve regulates the flow rate of coolant flowing through a radiator in a coolant circuit. The ECU feedback controls the opening size of the flow control valve such that the temperature of coolant at an engine outlet seeks a predetermined target value. During the feedback control, the ECU controls the flow control valve such that the opening size of the flow control valve remains above a predetermined lowest value. As a result, the flow control valve is prevented from falling in a small opening size range in which in which it is difficult to cause the engine outlet coolant temperature to seek the target value, and the engine outlet coolant temperature is favorably adjusted.

Abstract: An engine cooling apparatus includes a flow regulating valve, which adjusts a flow rate of a coolant passing through a radiator provided in a coolant circulation passage of the engine, and an electronic control unit (ECU), which controls an opening of the flow regulating valve such that an engine outlet coolant temperature reaches a necessary target temperature. The ECU sets a basic opening as a feedforward term based on the operation state of the engine. The ECU calculates a final opening from an F/B constant as a feedback term, which is increased or decreased such that the engine outlet coolant temperature reaches the target temperature, and the basic opening. Further, the ECU performs feedback control on the opening of the flow regulating valve based on the final opening. As a result, the responsibility of the coolant temperature control is improved.

Hence, the fuel consumption resulting from inertia torques caused by fluctuations in engine revolution speed, that is, fluctuations in the revolution speed of the input shaft of the transmission and a fluidic power transfer mechanism, is reduced, so that the efficiency as a whole increases and the fuel economy improves in comparison with the case where the optimal fuel consumption line is used as a control basis.

Abstract: Abrupt deceleration of a vehicle is detected based on a depression amount or a depression speed of a brake pedal. If abrupt deceleration of the vehicle has been detected during fuel-cut control, a command is issued to make forcible restoration of control out of the fuel-cut control.
