Hydrogels comprising poly(N-alkylacrylamide), poly(alkyleneglyco)di-acrylate or methacrylate, cross-linking agent, a source of calcium ions, and water are described, as well as methods of their preparation and use.
Abstract:
A method for the production of a macroporous ceramic foam, wherein: (a) forming a ceramic slip comprising a substantially homogeneous mixture of a ceramic particulate, an organic binder in a liquid carrier, and optionally one or more surfactants, wherein at least one surfactant is present if the organic binder does not function as a surfactant, and wherein the ceramic slip preferably has a viscosity in the range of from 15 to 200 mPas−1; (b) foaming the ceramic slip; and (c) heating the foamed ceramic slip at a temperature sufficient to substantially burn out the organic binder. The macroporous ceramic foam is suitable for use in biomedical applications such as synthetic bones, tissue engineering scaffolds or drug delivery devices.
Abstract:
A fluid loss additive for hydraulic cement, comprising a polyvinyl alcohol resin and a fluid loss ameliorating sulfonic acid-functionalized co-resin, where the polyvinyl alcohol has a characteristic viscosity in the range of about 1 to about 25 cps. The invention includes, in some embodiments, an aqueous concentrate of the PVOH resin and the sulfonic acid-functionalized co-resin, where the total resin content is in the range of about 10% to about 40% and the viscosity is less than 15,000 cps. By way of the invention it is possible to adjust hydraulic cement slurry characteristics in real time upon demand and reduce inventory by providing a concentrated aqueous fluid loss additive.
Abstract:
A mixture composition of a cellulose ether made from raw cotton linters and at least one additive is used in a cement extrusion mortar composition wherein the amount of the cellulose ether in the cement extrusion mortar composition is significantly reduced. When this cement extrusion mortar composition is mixed with a sufficient amount of water and extruded to form an object with comparable or lower crack formation, the plastification and/or extrusion properties of the resulting wet mortar are improved or comparable as compared to when using conventional similar cellulose ethers.
Abstract:
A mixture composition of a cellulose ether made from raw cotton linters and at least one additive is used in a dry cement based plaster (or render) composition wherein the amount of the cellulose ether in the render composition is significantly reduced. When this render composition is mixed with water and applied to a substrate, the water retention and thickening and/or sag resistance of the wet plaster are comparable or improved as compared to when using conventional similar cellulose ethers.
Abstract:
A ready-mixed composition, which sets when mixed with an activator for the reaction of calcined gypsum with water to form set gypsum, is disclosed. The composition comprises water and calcined gypsum in a weight ratio of water to calcined gypsum of from about 0.15 to about 0.5, as well as a set preventer comprising a polyacrylic acid and/or a salt thereof. The composition has a viscosity of from about 5,000 centipoise to about 48,000 centipoise. Also disclosed is a kit that comprises separately packaged components. One of the components is a composition comprising calcined gypsum and a polyacrylic acid and/or a salt thereof, and, optionally, water. Another component of the kit comprises an activator which, when mixed with the composition, permits the composition to set.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for process for preparing a coating by a) applying to a porous and/or absorbent substrate a liquid coating composition containing at least one component having (meth)acryloyl groups and a dynamic viscosity of less than 2000 mPa.s and 0.1 to 10 wt. %, based on the non-volatile content of the coating composition, of an additive selected from polyamides, oligomeric fatty acid amides and polymeric fatty acid amides and b) polymerizing the composition with radiation. The present invention also relates to the resulting coated substrates and to the coating compositions used in the process.
