The present invention is directed to an air filter medium comprising nanofibers, the filter medium having a thickness of less than 0.25 millimeters, a Figure of Merit of greater than about 0.075, and an efficiency of greater than about 99.9% when capturing aerosol particles of about 0.18 microns in size and a pressure drop of less than about 40 millimeters water column at a flow rate of about 32 liters/minute through a sample 100 cm2 in size. A coating of the nanofibers may also be used to enhance performance of existing filter media by increasing the FOM of the existing filter media. Preferably, the nanofibers are fibrillated.

The invention is directed to a precoat or body feed composition comprising a microbiological interception enhanced filter aid. Preferably, the microbiological interception enhanced filter aid comprises fibrillated lyocell nanofibers having coated on at least a portion of a surface thereof, a microbiological interception enhancing agent. The microbiological interception enhanced agent comprises a cationic material in combination with a biologically active metal. At least about 4 log reduction in bacterial interception is achieved with the microbiological interception enhanced filter aid alone or in combination with a bulk, untreated filter aid. A precoat composition including the microbiological interception enhanced filter aid can be used for one-step cold sterilization of beverages.

The invention is directed to a microbiological interception enhanced filter medium, preferably having an adsorbent prefilter located upstream from the filter medium. Preferably, the prefilter is adapted to remove natural organic matter in an influent prior to the influent contacting the microbiological interception enhanced filter medium, thereby preventing loss of charge on the filter medium. The microbiological interception enhanced filter medium is most preferably comprised of fibrillated cellulose fibers, in particular, lyocell fibers. At least a portion of the surface of the at least some of the fibers have formed thereon a microbiological interception enhancing agent comprising a cationic metal complex. A filter medium of the present invention provides greater than about 4 log viral interception, and greater than about 6 log bacterial interception.

The present invention is directed to a microporous filter medium treated with a microbiological interception enhancing agent comprising a cationic chemical having a medium to high charge density and a molecular weight greater than about 5000 Daltons, adsorbed on at least a portion of the microporous structure, and a biologically active metal in direct proximity to the cationic chemical and also on at least a portion of the microporous structure, wherein the flow of fluid through the filter medium decreases in response to an amount of polyanionic acids present in an influent. The invention relates to an aggregated silica gel which has been produced from silica gel particles having a particle size of 1 to 20.mu., a surface of 200 to 1000 m.sup.2 /g and a specific pore volume of 0.4 to 2.5 ml/g and a binding agent selected from synthetic or natural phyllosilicate, pyrogenic silicon dioxide and organic polymers soluble in water or dispersible in water. Aggregation takes place by spray-drying a suspension having 1 to 25% solids. The product is suitable as a matting agent for coatings, as an antiblocking agent for polymer films and as a beer clarifying agent.

The compositions are especially useful in combination with protein removal agents such as silica gel or tannin. The invention relates to a microfiltration and/or ultrafiltration membrane consisting of a polymer having nominal pores of 0.001-10 .mu.m. The special feature of the membranes according to the invention is that the matrix of the membrane incorporates an active adsorbent which is preferably polyvinyl pyrrolidone. Usually the polyvinyl polypyrrolidon is present in the membrane in an amount of 5-90% by weight and preferably in an amount of 30-70% by weight. Preferably the membrane is hydrophilic and is usually asymmetric or is constructed of different layers. The nominal pore size of the membrane is 0N05--5 .mu.m and preferably 0.2-1.0 .mu.m, while the membrane is tubular, flat or capillary. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method of preparation of the membrane and to a method of filtration of undissolved components from a liquid and/or the simultaneous adsorption of dissolved components from the liquid by means of the membrane, the method according to the invention is especially suitable for the removal of components causing turbidity from a liquid, especially beer.

A method for treating beverages containing turbidity procursors and/or enzymes is described. The technique involves contacting the beverages with a diol or dicarboxylic acid polycondensate at a temperature ranging from 28.4.degree. to 176.degree. F., thereby resulting in separation of deleterious substance. The colloidal and taste qualities of the resultant beverages is thereby enhanced.
