A filter aid may include acid-washed diatomaceous earth having high purity, and perlite. A method of making a high purity filter aid may include acid washing diatomaceous earth to reduce the h in the diatomaceous earth, and combining the acid-washed diatomaceous earth with high purity perlite to obtain to obtain a high purity filter aid. A method of reducing extractable metals from diatomaceous earth may include washing the diatomaceous earth in a first acid, rinsing the diatomaceous earth, and washing the diatomaceous earth in a second acid. The first acid may include an inorganic acid having a first strength, and the second acid may include an organic acid having a second strength different than the first strength. A method of filtering a beverage may include passing the beverage through a filter including a filter aid including acid-washed diatomaceous earth having high purity, and perlite.

Disclosed herein is a method for improving the health of animal or human microflora using aloe vera. A method of purifying decolorized dried aloe vera leaf juice is also disclosed. The method may include removing an aloe vera leaf from an aloe vera plant, washing and/or sanitizing the leaf, and grinding the leaf into a slurry and subsequently purifying with activated carbon. The method may remove pigmented substances including the undesirable phenolic compounds present in aloe vera latex, and in particular the anthrones aloin A and aloin B, aloesin (a chromone) and aloe-emodin (an anthraquinone). Following purification, the liquid juice may then be spray-dried to form a final dry juice powder.

A process is disclosed for reducing the alcohol content and/or the sugar content of a beverage. The process comprises wetting a predetermined amount of a particulate solid material with a predetermined amount of water, and contacting the beverage with the pre-wetted solid adsorbent material. The material selectively adsorbs alcohol, sugar, or alcohol and sugar from the beverage. The process can be carried out at a small scale and does not require any sophisticated equipment.
Abstract:
Methods for concentrating phenolics in a solution and compositions related to the concentrated phenolics are provided. In particular, methods and compositions are described relating to concentrated phenolics obtained from cranberry feedstock extracts combined with fumaric acid as beverage additives. Additionally, methods for obtaining phenolics from feedstocks using resin absorbtion and elution are described.

The present disclosure relates to methods and compositions for fining fermentable beverages, such as alcoholic fermentable beverages, for example, wine, beer, lager, ale, cider, perry, spirit and liqueur. The compositions herein comprise a pectin and carrageenan which are used to treat the beverage prior to fermentation.

The present invention relates to liquid clarification. More closely, the invention relates to beverage clarification, such as reduction of colloidal (not microbial) haze-causing substances in beer or related beverages such as wine, juices, flavorings etc. The method of the invention uses a hydrophilic surface for adsorption of haze-forming substances by hydrogen bonding interaction properties between the surface and the haze-forming substances.

The present invention provides a method for preventing or reducing off-flavor in a beverage. Silane-treated silica filter media are synthesized. By contacting the beverage with the silane-treated silica filter, one or more off-flavor substances or off-flavor precursors bind to the silane-treated silica filter media and are removed. Beverages that tend to develop off-flavor upon storage such as alcoholic, fruit, and vegetable beverages, are suitable for the present invention. The present invention provides a method that can reduce the level of off-flavor substances such as trans-2-nonenal, diacetyl, and cis-3-nonenal. The present invention also provides a method that can reduce the level of off-flavor precursors such as linoleic acid. The silica filter media useful for the present method include rice hull ash, oat hull ash, or diatomaceous earth.

Equipment to extract excess sugar from fruit juice using a centrifuge containing reusable sugar absorbing materials is presented. A method comprising repeatedly performing successive extraction and cleaning cycles on successive portions of juice is also presented. The method's extraction cycle involves extracting the sugar from the juice. The cleaning cycle includes removing the extracted sugar from the sugar absorbing material with hot and cold water, and both cycles include removing all the liquid out of the centrifuge by introducing an inert gas under pressure into the centrifuge at the end of each respective cycle.

A method and apparatus for treatment of feces is present in which usable organic and inorganic chemical compounds and substances are extracted from the fecal material for reuse. The process and apparatus includes receiving a mixture of fecal material from various sources, separating the liquid from the solids for further processing or disposal, mixing the solids with an acid and/or solvent solution to break down the solids into components to be extracted, filtering solids from the mixture, distilling the filtrate to remove remaining solvents, reacting the remaining solids with a metal hydroxide solution to yield fats, fatty acids, oils, alcohols, sugars, and other minerals, and further processing these materials to produce lubricants, grease, emulsifiers, biodiesel, fuels and/or fertilizers.
