Abstract: Provided are an apparatus for displaying a holographic image and a method of controlling the apparatus. The apparatus for displaying the holographic image includes a controller, a light source, an optical system, a spatial light modulator, a filter, an electric optical scanner, a multi-channel projection optics, and a screen. The spatial light modulator modulates a light beam passing through the optical system according to a predetermined subframe sequence of holographic image frames, the filter performs spatial-angular filtering of the modulated light beam to exclude parasitic diffraction order components from the modulated light beam, and the electric optical scanner directs the modulated and filtered light beam towards a corresponding channel of the multi-channel projection optics and forms a plurality of viewing zones on a focal plane of a field lens provided in the screen.

Abstract: A method of enlarging an observation window from which the reconstruction from a Computer Generated Hologram (CGH) may be viewed, including reproducing a CGH, and shifting a location of an exit pupil or observation window of an optical system reproducing the CGH. A method of increasing a viewing angle from which the reconstruction from a Computer Generated Hologram (CGH) may be seen, including producing a plurality of instances of a CGH, projecting each one of the instances in a different direction so that a first exit pupil of a first instance is close to a second exit pupil of a second instance. An optical system including a plurality of exit pupils associated with a plurality of optical components, further including a light deflector for jittering a location of a first exit pupil so as to increase an overlap of the first exit pupil with a second exit pupil. Related apparatus and methods are also described.

Abstract: In an exhibition device and a video picture exhibition method according to the present invention, at least one exhibition object for reinforcing the three-dimensional effect of a spatial image is disposed in a region other than an upper surface of an image-forming optical element (micromirror array) in an upper surface of an enclosure (case) of the device and at a position where a distance from the center of a virtual display area of the spatial image projected from a display to over the enclosure thereto is not greater than a diagonal length of the virtual display area or at a position where the distance is not greater than a maximum diameter of the virtual display area. This achieves the effective display of an impressive two-dimensional video picture appearing three-dimensional in association with the exhibition object disposed on the upper surface.

Abstract: A holographic display (“display”) for a head-mounted display (“HMD”). The display includes a source configured to emit at least partially coherent light and a beam conditioner that conditions the light from the source into one or more beams of light. The display also includes one or more spatial light modulators configured to encode the one or more beams of light using a hologram of a virtual reality image. The display further includes an objective lens and a conversion lens. The objective lens is positioned to create an intermediate image at a Fourier plane, and the intermediate image is a Fourier transform of the hologram. The conversion lens performs a Fourier transform of the intermediate image to generate an output hologram. The conversion lens also magnifies a portion of the output hologram and directs the magnified portion of the output hologram to an exit pupil of the HMD.

Abstract: A holographic display system for generating a super hologram with full parallax in different fields of view in the horizontal and vertical directions. The display system includes assemblies or subsystems each adapted to combine holographic displays and coarse integral displays to produce or display a coarse integral hologram. The display system is adapted to combine such displays or display systems to add more detail or information. For example, the display system can be assembled as if it were made up of “holographic bricks” that can be stacked and combined to provide a unique image/output. Briefly, the display system described herein teaches techniques for combining coarse integral holographic (CIH) displays in a seamless and scalable manner, e.g., a display system where multiple spatial light modulators (SLMs) can be placed or provided behind coarse integral optics.

Abstract: A method for generating three dimensional (3D) displays. The method includes displaying a hologram that combines three (or more) images encoded into three (or more) different OAM channels, and the method also includes reflecting light from the displayed hologram to create a multichannel light beam. Then, the method involves decoding the multichannel light beam to decode and display the three encoded images. The decoding step includes displaying the three encoded images in decoded form in three view zones, three focal planes, or on three spaced-apart planes. The decoding is performed by a single decoding screen using holograms used for generating the three encoded images or is performed by three decoding screens configured based on a differing one of the holograms used for generating the three encoded images. The displaying of the hologram step includes operating a spatial light modulator (SLM) to display the hologram on a screen of the SLM.
