Abstract:
An apparatus for controlling a turbogenerator system when a power electronics circuit of the turbogenerator system is unable to provide a sufficient load on the turbogenerator to prevent the turbogenerator from accelerating uncontrollably is described. The apparatus comprises a monitor including a first sensing device operable to detect a condition of the turbogenerator, and a brake controller responsive to a turbogenerator detection output from the first sensing device to issue a first brake control signal for operating a brake circuit to prevent the turbogenerator from accelerating uncontrollably and a second brake control signal for operating the brake circuit to permit resumption of normal operation of the turbogenerator.

A pumped-storage power plant is disclosed, such as an electric unit having a converter and a rotating electric synchronous machine. The converter is designed as a modular multilevel converter and the machine is directly connectable to the converter, wherein the converter has an adjustable voltage.
Abstract:
A method for initializing a generator may include sending a field reference voltage to an exciter that may provide a direct current (DC) current and a DC voltage to a rotor of a generator based on a current set point that corresponds to the field reference voltage. The method may then include receiving a voltage feedback signal output by the generator, determining one or more locations of one or more poles of the generator based on the voltage feedback signal, and sending one or more firing signals to one or more switches of a starter after determining the locations of the poles, such that the switches couple the voltage to a stator of the generator.
Abstract:
A method for gas turbine start-up can include placing a static starter in a torque control mode, sending a torque reference to the static starter to establish a startup torque for the gas turbine, setting current set points for the static starter and modulating a current output to achieve the startup torque.

Abstract:
Systems and methods for black starting a power grid are described. A battery-powered configuration including, but not limited to, a motor, drive, and batteries can be coupled to a condenser which is coupled to a power grid. The drive can draw power from the batteries and use the power to accelerate the motor. As the motor accelerates, the condenser can accelerate by virtue of a shaft coupling the motor to the condenser. Upon the condenser reaching a certain speed or operational capacity, an inverter can de-block from a power distribution line and allow power to enter the power grid. In certain embodiments, a control device such as a circuit or computing device can be used to facilitate the black start of the power grid.
Abstract:
A soft-start circuit composed of active components and passive components and a soft-start voltage regulator based on this soft-start circuit are disclosed. The soft-start voltage regulator is coupled to a generator, a battery and a starter. When the starter is started, the soft-start voltage regulator receives the voltage of the battery to generate a soft-start signal, enabling the generator to establish a voltage. Further, after the generator established the voltage, the soft-start voltage regulator is shut off and the soft-start signal is outputted.
Abstract:
A method for operating a power supply unit for an electrical system of a motor vehicle, the power supply unit having an electric generator having a stator having a stator winding and a rotor having a rotor winding, as well as a field current controller assigned to the rotor winding for selecting the setpoint of the current flowing through the rotor winding; the electric generator being set into rotation without a current being specified by the rotor winding, thereby generating a starting voltage; at least one component of the power supply unit or of the vehicle electrical system being energized by the starting voltage.
Abstract:
A power plant, and a method for using an electrical unit therefor are disclosed, wherein, an electrical machine can be connected to a power network via a converter and a block transformer. A method is disclosed for using the electrical unit, wherein the converter disconnects the block transformer from the machine in the event of a malfunction of the block transformer.
Abstract:
Starting and stopping an engine is automatically controlled based on a load without using a relay. An inverter engine-driven power generator has an alternator, a rectifying circuit, a DC/DC converter, and an inverter circuit. A load detection circuit is connected to an output of the inverter circuit in parallel. A load detection line of the load detection circuit is connected to an output line of the inverter circuit in parallel via resistors. A power supply formed of a battery is connected to the load detection line. A decision circuit outputs a load detection signal when a current having a preset value or more flows through the load detection line. A drive/stop CPU starts the engine in response to the load detection. The resistors are set at a resistance value which does not influence a load to which a generator output is supplied.
