Abstract:
An optical package includes a two-piece fiber subassembly which allows for separate axial and radial alignment of the fiber to the active optical device. The subassembly consists of an inner ferrule encasing the fiber and an outer sleeve which holds the ferrule. The ferrule is moved axially within the sleeve to perfect the axial alignment of the fiber and the device. The sleeve includes a number of openings around its circumference to expose the ferrule. Once axial alignment is achieved, the outer sleeve is attached to the ferrule through these openings to fix the axial alignment.
Abstract:
An optical distribution architecture is disclosed wherein wavelength stabilized continuous wavelength lasers are centrally positioned in tandem with star couplers to distributed laser power among a plurality of lightguide paths. The laser power apportioned to each such path may then be locally or remotely modulated thereby reducing the number of lasers required to equip a network. Advantageously, lightguide fibres are single mode and polarization maintaining.
Abstract:
An apparatus is presented in which a sample can be accurately repositioned in a spectroscopic and/or imaging apparatus upon multiple insertions, and where the apparatus can be worn by living subjects for extended periods of time. The apparatus additionally reduces the temperature increase and stabilizes the temperature of the sample upon irradiation with an optical source of excitation. Additionally, the apparatus stabilizes the pressure and critical optical properties of the sample and its interface with the apparatus. Alternatively or additionally, the apparatus can be used to alter and/or substantially reduce fluorescence from targeted fluorophores in the sample.
Abstract:
An apparatus for increasing the blood perfusion in skin by elevating the temperature, and for providing superior heat sinking to the skin of thermally dissipative devices is disclosed. The increased perfusion gives rise to improved thermal transport properties near the site of elevated temperature which is advantageously used by thermally connecting the dissipative devices to the skin. The heat generated by the thermally dissipative devices can supplement or replace separate heating elements to elevate the skin temperature. Alternatively, thermal isolation of the heated area of the skin from the heat sinks of the dissipative devices can minimize the temperature of the skin in contact with the heat sinks.
Abstract:
An apparatus is disclosed wherein laser radiation illuminates a sample using all reflective optics and wherein in-elastically scattered light from the sample is collected using the identical elements. The apparatus obviates the problem of contaminating the laser radiation with unwanted spectra from transmissive optics while providing very high rejection of the laser radiation with respect to the in-elastically scattered light. In addition, the apparatus can collect and launch light with high numerical aperture and large field of view.
Abstract:
This disclosure concerns systems, methods and devices for temperature-based control of laser performance. One example of a method is performed in connection with a laser of an optoelectronic transceiver. In particular, the laser is operated over a range of temperatures and the optical output of the laser is monitored. During operation of the laser, the bias current and current swing supplied to the laser are adjusted to the extent necessary to maintain a substantially constant optical output from the laser over the range of temperatures.
Abstract:
An apparatus for enhancing the selectivity for spectroscopic measurements of analytes in a turbid medium is described. In one example, spatial filters are used to select only certain radii from the medium to be imaged. This selection is accomplished by placing an optical obstruction on the surface of the medium or at an image plane of the surface later in the optical imaging system. In one implementation, this is achieved by placing a fiber bundle at an image plane of the collecting optical system and then using a spacer of appropriate size at the center of the fiber bundle to act as a central obstruction.
Abstract:
An optical apparatus in which multiplexed holograms are used to achieve wavelength selectivity and polarization manipulation is used to facilitate near-normal incidence of light on the holograms. The polarization manipulation allows light reflected from the holograms to be separated from the light incident on the holograms. In one application, the apparatus can be used to extract spectral lines of an analyte from radiation scattered from a sample.

The present invention relates generally to optoelectronic devices, and particularly to a submount, pedestal, and bond wire assembly for a transistor outline package. A bottom surface of the submount is connected to a top surface of the pedestal. Each bond wire in a bond wire set is connected to a position on the top surface of the submount, and to a position on the signal line. The signal line is positioned a first distance from the position on the top surface of the submount and a second distance from the pedestal. The submount is sized such that a portion of the bottom and the top surface of the submount extends beyond the top surface of the pedestal such that the first distance is less than the second distance.

An apparatus is described in which the temperature of a semiconductor laser (or other device) can be set to a desired value by using the heat generated by the laser itself in conjunction with an adjustable thermal impedance heat sink to effect the desired temperature rise.
