摘要: A shroud for the cooling fan of a motor vehicle engine provides a circumferential axial flow of air between the fan blade tips and the shroud to improve fan efficiency and engine cooling. The shroud may include a circumferentially extending Coanda surface and adjacent circular throat which directs air flow toward the annulus between the shroud and the fan blade tips. Adjustment of the air pressure and throat dimension allows accurate control of the velocity profile of the air flow through the annulus.

摘要: A plasma (56, 333) generating apparatus (10, 320, 450) wherein a stage (250, 300, 300A, 350, 400, 425) is constructed to keep the plasma on the substrate (S). A pair of electrically, non-conductive tubes (252, 252A, 303, 305, 303A, 305A 403, 405) are mounted on a conductive base plate (253,306,406) having holes (255, 306B) for gas flow and one of the tubes supports a conductive support plate (251, 301, 351, 401) for a substrate (S). An electrically conductive disk (304, 404) between the tubes is provided. An outer conductive tube (307, 418) is preferably used with larger diameter chambers. The stage is designed to prevent the plasma from falling below conductive support plate which preferably mounts a graphite insert (302, 352, 402) which supports the substrate.

摘要: A class of highly stable supergallery pillared clay compositions that have a basal spacing up to 55 .ANG. corresponding a gallery height of 35 .ANG. for samples dried at room temperature and a basal spacing up to 45 .ANG. corresponding a gallery height of 255 .ANG. for samples steamed at 800.degree. C. for 17 hours. Said compositions are prepared by special procedures including pillaring reaction in presence of poly (vinyl alcohol) as a pillaring precursor, an aging process at pH of around 4 to 9, and a calcinating or steaming treatment at high temperature. The new compositions exhibit catalytic properties and adsorption properties superior to prior art pillared clays. Said compositions are useful as catalysts for carbonium-ion reaction, and as adsorbents and catalyst carriers. They are especially suitable for preparing microspheric cracking catalysts for heavy oil or residual feedstock.

摘要: A method and device for removing oxygen using a reduced oxidase enzyme and for providing a colorimetrically detectable signal of the presence of the oxygen is disclosed. A reduced laccase or ascorbate oxidase is preferably provided with a substrate which reduces the oxidase. Color is generated which can be detected visually or by other means such as a spectrophotometer. The method and device are particularly useful in the food, pharmaceutical and biological industries.

摘要: Lipid bilayers which incorporate poly-3-hydroxybutyrate/polyphosphate ion channels. The ion channels are preferably purified polyhydroxybutyrate polyphosphate complexes extracted from organisms or prepared from the individual constituents which have been size selected. The bilayers are useful for testing the affect of various molecules and ions on the channel which correlates to the in vivo result. The bilayers are useful for transporting the channels into cells or other bilayers.

摘要: Insect control agents comprising a gene encoding a protein that affects the host range of baculoviruses. A unique gene encoding a protein of 25.7 kdal, p25.7, isolated from a baculovirus from the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar nuclear polyhedrosis virus, that affects the host range of baculoviruses is disclosed. This "host range gene" allows a second baculovirus, Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus, to replicate in an insect cell line that will not normally support its replication. Methods for producing the insect control agents are included. A recombinant Autographa california nuclear polyhedrosis virus, in which the p25.7 gene has been inserted, was demonstrated to replicate in both a cell line and an insect species that the unaltered Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus does not infect. The recombinant Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus also shows increased virulence towards insects that are susceptible to infection by unaltered virus as demonstrated by a significant reduction in the dose of virus needed to kill 50% of the infected insect larvae (LD50).
