A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprises ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules defined by the product between a liquid crystal molecule design parameter, .alpha., and an apparent cone angle, .theta., of the liquid crystal molecules, .alpha..theta., being such that 12.5.ltoreq..alpha..theta..ltoreq.16 wherein .alpha.=(an infrared peak intensity ratio of the alkyl chain portion of a liquid crystal molecule prior to and after switching through an electric field)/(an infrared peak intensity ratio of the core portion of the liquid crystal molecules prior to and after switching through an electric field) and .theta. is an apparent cone angle (.degree.) observed from the direction to the substrate normal and the cone has an imaginary circular cone surface when liquid crystal molecules are rotated along the imaginary circular cone surface at the time of switching through an electric field. The composition ensures high speed response and high contrast.

A small-sized diaphragm device for an image pickup lens system having an electrochromic element the light transmitting properties of which are changed on application of an electrical voltage. The diaphragm device also includes a first set of plural concentrically arranged transparent electrodes, a second set of plural concentrically arranged transparent electrodes and third electrodes formed on the outermost peripheries of these sets of transparent electrodes for acting as counter-electrodes for the transparent electrodes. The diaphragm device has a sufficient light transmittance when in the transparent state, while having high light interrupting properties when in the light interrupting state.

A tractor-drawn seed sowing apparatus including a seed sower which travels on a ground surface while furrowing with furrow-cutting claw wheels, a power transmitter connected to a tractor so as to transmit a driving force of the tractor to the seed sower, and a coupler which connects the seed sower to the power transmitter, and the coupler is made of vertically and horizontally arranged linkages so that the seed sower can make up-and-down, pitching, rolling and yawing motions on irregular ground surfaces.

The invention relates to tuned multifunctional linker molecules for charge transport through organic-inorganic composite structures. The problem underlying the present invention is to provide multifunctional linker molecules for tuning the conductivity in nanoparticle-linker assemblies which can be used in the formation of electronic networks and circuits and thin films of nanoparticles. The problem is solved according to the invention by providing a multifunctional linker molecule of the general structure CON1—FUNC1—X—FUNC2—CON2 in which X is the central body of the molecule, FUNC1 and FUNC2 independently of each other are molecular groups introducing a dipole moment and/or capable of forming intermolecular and/or intramolecular hydrogen bonding networks, and CON1 and CON2 independently of each other are molecular groups binding to nanostructured units comprising metal and semiconductor materials.
