A catalytic reactor for catalytic conversion of exhaust gases, in particular exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, includes a honeycomb body disposed in a metallic casing. The honeycomb body has a large number of channels through which exhaust gas can flow, a gas inlet side and a gas outlet side. The honeycomb body is thermally insulated by internal insulation over a part of its length from the gas inlet side onward and preferably also from the gas outlet side onward, with respect to an inner surface of the casing. An outer surface of the casing also has thermal insulation at least in some regions. The casing serves as a heat store or accumulator, at least in some regions. This construction provides advantageous properties during both cold starting and hot starting as one sub-region rapidly heats up during cold starting and one sub-region only slowly cools down after prolonged operation due to storage of heat in the casing.

An assembly for operating an electrical heater in a catalytic converter system connected in an exhaust gas cleaning system downstream of an internal combustion engine. The electrical heater is supplied with an electrical heating current through an electronically controlled power switch. The system is heated with the electrical heater to or above a minimum temperature necessary for catalytic conversion. The temperature of the catalytic converter is measured and utilized as a controlled variable of at least two different control circuits. At least one preferred control circuit is defined from a plurality of control circuits. The system is controlled in regular operation with the preferred control circuit. The preferred control circuit is automatically monitored for malfunction and, if a malfunction is detected, control is automatically transferred to another control circuit.

Further measuring variables characterizing an applicable operating state of the engine are determined, a temperature limit value is determined from the further measuring variables, catalytic activity is determined by comparing the temperature measuring variable with the temperature limit value, and a report is issued if the temperature measuring variable is lower than the temperature limit value.

Carrying out the evaporation outside the exhaust system uses considerably smaller hydrolysis catalytic converters, which is space-saving and cost-saving compared to conventional devices for providing a reducing agent for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides.

The power distribution structure can be connected to a power source via a power feed line. At least one of the power feed line and the power distribution structure contains at least one closed-loop control element made of a material with a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) which can be placed at least in thermal contact with a fluid flowing through the honeycomb body. The electrically heatable honeycomb body permits, through the formation of a self-regulating closed-loop control element made for example from the PTC material, the implementation of a simple measure for performing closed-loop control on the heating power of the electrically heatable honeycomb body since the rest of the open-loop control or closed-loop control electronics can be significantly simplified or can even be dispensed with.

A joining material for positioning brazing material on at least one discrete joining region of an at least partially metallic surface, includes a brazing material formed discontinuously on a continuous carrier material. The joining material is advantageously used for the production of honeycomb bodies, since the joining material makes it easy to join adjacent layers of the honeycomb body only at discrete joining regions. In this way, it is possible to produce honeycomb bodies which are elastic and yet durable. A process for producing a honeycomb body, a corresponding honeycomb body and a motor vehicle having a honeycomb body, are also provided.
