The present invention relates to a carbon fiber bundle to which an amino group-containing modified polyolefin resin has applied, wherein the amount of applying amino group-containing modified polyolefin resin is 0.2 to 5.0% by mass. This carbon fiber bundle can be produced by applying 0.2 to 5.0% by mass of the amino group-containing modified polyolefin resin to the surface of the carbon fiber bundle. The present invention can exhibit excellent interface adhesion to a polyolefin resin, particularly to a polypropylene resin, and can provide a carbon fiber bundle useful for reinforcing the polyolefin resin and a method of producing the same.

Provided is a carbon fiber bundle for obtaining a fiber-reinforced resin having high mechanical characteristics. A carbon fiber bundle formed of single carbon fibers, each of which has no uneven surface structure of 0.6 μm or more in length extending in the longitudinal direction of the single fiber; which has an uneven structure having a difference in height (Rp−v) of 5 to 25 nm between the highest portion and the lowest portion of the surface of the single fiber and having an average roughness Ra of 2 to 6 nm; and which has a ratio of the major axis to the minor axis (major axis/minor axis) of a cross-section of the single fiber of 1.00 to 1.01, wherein a mass of the single fiber per unit length falls within the range of 0.030 to 0.042 mg/m; a strand strength is 5900 MPa or more; a strand elastic modulus measured by the ASTM method is 250 to 380 GPa; and a knot tenacity is 900 N/mm2 or more.

The resin coated carbon fibers have a length of about 1 inch to about 6 inches. A method of reinforcing concrete comprises mixing the cement, the acrylic coated carbon fibers, any optional components (such as silica fumes, slag, stone, sand, and/or other aggregates), and water to form a cement slurry, and letting the slurry set to cure the cement and form bonds between the cement and the carbon fibers, thereby obtaining reinforced concrete are also disclosed.

Methods are provided for functionalizing a macroscopic film comprised of nanoscale fibers by controlled irradiation. The methods may include the steps of (a) providing a nanoscale fiber film material comprising a plurality of nanoscale fibers (which may include single wall nanotubes, multi-wall nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, or a combination thereof); and (b) irradiating the nanoscale fiber film material with a controlled amount of radiation in the open air or in a controlled atmosphere. The step of irradiating the nanoscale fiber film material is effective to functionalize the plurality of nanoscale fibers. Irradiated nanoscale fiber films are also provided having improved mechanical and electrical conducting properties.
