Abstract:
A nickel base single crystal compliant layer on a ceramic blade has the capability to sustain high stresses and high operating temperature. Layers of nickel and platinum bonded on a single crystal superalloy over a sputtered gold-chromium layer support the high stress levels at elevated temperature without extrusion of the soft platinum or nickel layer and without destruction of an NiO compliant surface. The compliant layers have survived stress and temperature conditions without failure to the ceramic blade and the system can be stressed/heated and unloaded/cooled repeatedly without damage to the ceramic blades. A single crystal nickel base superalloy (i.e., SC180) has high strength properties at elevated temperature. Thin layers of chromium followed by gold are e-beam evaporated on one side of a polished surface of the alloy. Pure nickel is electroplated over this e-beam gold-chromium layer. Platinum is either electroplated or plated electrolessly over the nickel layer. The structure is annealed in vacuum or inert atmosphere to allow the diffusion of gold-chromium alloy into the superalloy and permit the nickel layer and diffusion of nickel into platinum to form a multilayer structure which is metallurgically bonded. The sheet is oxidized in air to allow diffusion of the nickel layer through the platinum to come to the surface and oxidize forming nickel oxide. This nickel oxide layer acts as the load distribution layer which does not extrude and the structural integrity of the compliant layer is maintained by the high-strength single crystal superalloy.
Abstract:
A hybrid rotor, a manufacturing method thereof and a gas turbine realize reduced manufacturing cost and reduced weight of parts. An impeller part 31 as a rotor main part comprises a bore portion 32, impellers 34 provided therearound and a shaft bore 33 provided centrally of the bore portion 32. An enlarged shaft bore portion 35 is coaxially provided in the shaft bore 33. The impeller part 31 is made of Ti or Ni alloy by precision casting. A ring member 10 made of a metal base composite material is inserted into the enlarged shaft bore portion 35 and is bonded together by friction bonding or diffusion bonding to thereby strengthen the rotor. The rotor main part is manufactured by precision casting without need of machining. The ring member 10 is separately manufactured from the impeller part 11. By strengthening the rotor, the bore portion 32 can be made thin. Thus, manufacturing cost is remarkably reduced and weight of the rotor is also reduced.

Abstract:
A compliant sleeve for attaching a ceramic member to a metal member is comprised of a superalloy substrate having a metal contacting side and a ceramic contacting side. The ceramic contacting side is plated with a layer of nickel followed by a layer of platinum. The substrate is then oxidized to form nickel oxide scale on the ceramic contacting side and a cobalt oxide scale on the metal contacting side. A lubricious coating of boron nitride is then applied over the metal contacting side, and a shear-stress limiting gold coating is applied over the ceramic contacting side.
Abstract:
A refrigerant compressor having a drive shaft rotatable to cause compression of a refrigerant gas, and a drive power transmission unit for transmitting a drive power from an external drive power source to the drive shaft, the drive power transmission unit having a pulley freely rotatably mounted around the drive shaft, a power transmitting element fixed to the drive shaft, and a shock absorbent rubber element arranged between the pulley and the power transmitting element for providing a positive engagement between the rubber element and the pulley, and between the rubber element and the power transmitting element. The shock absorbent rubber element absorbs a change in a load torque applied to the compressor before the torque change is transmitted to the external drive power source via the pulley, and disengages from at least one of the pulley and the power transmitting element when an excessive load torque is applied to the compressor to interrupt transmission of the excessive load torque from the compressor to the external drive power source.
Abstract:
A compressor for a refrigeration machine is provided without any problems of reduction in the life of a thrust bearing structure even when a substitutive coolant not containing any chlorine is used. In the compressor for a refrigeration machine having a thrust bearing made of steel for supporting a thrust load applied to a drive shaft, a thrust bearing surface made of a material different from that of the drive shaft is formed in the thrust bearing by means of a surface treatment. Alternatively a washer defining the thrust bearing surface may be surface treated to provide a material different from that of the drive shaft. The washer may also be made of a material different from that of the drive shaft. According to the the present invention, even when a boundary lubricating state is produced between the drive shaft and the thrust bearing surface sticking is prevented. As a result, the life of the thrust bearing structure of the drive shaft can be made longer and a problem of reduction in the life of the thrust bearing structure can be avoided even when a substitutive coolant not containing any chlorine is utilized.
Abstract:
A corrosion resistant cermet comprises a ceramic component (e.g., WC) and a binder alloy comprised of a major component (e.g., one or more of iron, nickel, cobalt, their mixtures, and their alloys) and at least one additive component (e.g., one or more of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum). Plungers for hyper compressors used in the corrosive environments generated during the manufacture of low density polyethylene (LDPE) or ethylene copolymers are an example of the use of the corrosion resistant cermet.

This invention relates to a piston and a method of manufacturing the same. The piston includes a substantially cylindrical member having a first end and a second end. The cylindrical member includes an open cavity extending axially from the second end to adjacent the first end such that the second end has an inner annular surface defined by an inner diameter. The piston further includes a disk having a radially outer surface defined by an outer diameter fixedly secured to the second end of the cylindrical member. The outer diameter of the disk is substantially equal to the inner diameter of the inner annular surface of the second end of the cylindrical member. A circumferentially extending recessed area for receiving particles produced while fixedly securing the disk to the second end of the cylindrical member is provided on either the radially outer surface of the disk or the inner annular surface of the second end of the cylindrical member.
