An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for tracking the location of one or more target tracking apparatus with a master tracking apparatus. The master tracking apparatus communicates with the target tracking apparatus via radio frequency (RF) signals. The target tracking apparatus includes a tamper-resistant band and closure that are designed to resist unauthorized removal from the target subject and to alert the master operator of an attempted or completed unauthorized removal. The master tracking apparatus and the target tracking apparatus are each capable of initiating one or more alarm modes based on certain alarm events, such as activation of a distress alarm initiator by the target subject or activation of a check-in selector control by the master operator. Upon occurrence of an alarm event, the master and target tracking apparatus each communicates an alert signal to the other apparatus and each notifies the master operator or target subject of the occurrence of the alarm event.

The lost pet notification system includes three elements: a pet collar that automatically activates an alarm once the pet becomes lost, a portable hand held unit that continually monitors the location of the pet, and a base station that automatically transmits a signal to the owner once the portable unit determines that the pet is lost. The pet collar continually receives a polling signal from the portable unit while the pet is within transmission range of the portable unit. In response to each polling signal, the pet collar transmits a reply signal to the portable unit. Once the polling signal can no longer be detected by the pet collar, the pet collar automatically activates an alarm. In addition, the portable unit activates an alarm and also transmits a notification signal to the base station. Once the notification signal is received, a the base station automatically places a telephone call to the predetermined telephone number and plays the associated message to alert the pet owner that the pet is lost. If the pet comes back within the transmission range of the portable unit, the portable unit transmits a second notification signal to the base unit which will places a second call to the owner to notify him or her that their pet is safe. The invention may also include advanced features such as a paging unit for receiving information, a global positioning device, a RF beacon transmitter, and cellular telephone emulator to transmit information to a monitoring station.

An owner is alerted when they are separated from the objects by determining when a trigger event occurs, such as a person leaving and/or entering a particular monitored area or location. These monitored areas can be retrofitted with an electronic interrogation device that monitors local conditions to determine whether a user is entering or leaving the monitored area to trigger an interrogation of the personal items. The interrogation device is constructed and arranged to communicate with the objects to determine whether the objects are with the owner. The interrogation device automatically determines the presence of a particular object at the monitored environment and automatically generates a notification when needed. The system further controls functionality of the objects, according to illustrative embodiments, when the object is present.

In an embodiment, the packets of the beacon signal transmitted at the reference frequency may include an indication of the next frequency according to the modified frequency hopping pattern.
