The ceramic coating is applied as a plurality of columnar ceramic grains extending substantially perpendicularly away from the metallic article and the columnar ceramic grains extending from the oxide layer on the metallic article.

The invention provides a high strength steel sheet which exhibits excellent chemical convertibility and corrosion resistance after electrodeposition coating even in the case where the steel sheet has a high Si content, and a method for manufacturing such steel sheets. A method of treating the surface of an aluminum-based engine block cylinder bore that has been mechanically roughened. In one form, this method includes using vibratory stress relief, elevated temperature stress relief or cryogenic stress relief so that residual stresses imparted to the surface by the roughening process are reduced. In this way, a protective coating that is also applied to the bore surface will exhibit better adhesion and lower incidence of stress-induced or fatigue-induced cracking.

To be able to satisfy the requirements placed on the coated strip (1) with regard to good deformability of the strip, as far as possible without cracking and peeling, and with regard to high anti-corrosion protection in a more effective and reliable manner, the disclosure proposes that, in the region delimited by the snout (6), a melt is used which is intentionally implemented differently, in terms of its chemical composition, than the chemical composition of the melt used in the melting bath (3).

A vacuum deposition process suitable for coating discrete articles with a zinc-rich, fully alloyed layer is described. In a process step of contacting the article with metallic Zn vapor, the temperature of the article is equal to or higher than the dew point of the Zn vapor. The process results in a coating having a uniform thickness, even on less accessible surfaces. Additionally, the roughness of the steel substrate is essentially preserved. By properly engineering the surface of the substrate, coated articles can be obtained having a roughness providing for optimal paint adhesion.

A method and apparatus are provided for making a metal product with improved surface characteristics. The method provides for treating the metal product through a method including: heating the metal product; exposing the outer surface of the metal product to a controlled environment; and oxidising the outer surface of the metal product. The heating may take the metal product to an elevated temperature, the elevated temperature of the metal product being at least 725° C. The method further includes a controlled environment around the metal product which is controlled with respect to the atmosphere around the metal product, and in particular the nitrogen and/or oxygen and/or hydrogen content thereof. The result is a more consistent surface for elongate metal products, having a more consistent colour to the surface, a more durable and hard wearing surface and/or a surface which is not prone to flaking.
