A compensator is described for use on those manifold fuel injectors for gasoline engines which utilize a gas pressure cycler to vary the instantaneous rate of liquid fuel injection in proportion to the instantaneous rate of engine intake air flow into each engine cylinder during each intake stroke. The compensator adjusts liquid fuel injection pressure by bleeding adjustable air quantities out of the gas pressure cycler during pressure rise, and then subsequently returning these bleed masses into the gas pressure cycler during pressure decrease. A compensator of this invention is of relatively simple mechanical design, and uses a moderately complex electronic controller.

A swash plate type axial piston pump of enhanced assemblability and high assembling efficiency, in which looseness between constituent members of the pump is suppressed to minimum. A valve plate (31) and a cylinder block (15) are inserted in a first housing section (1a) sequentially, and then a second housing section (1b) is installed on the cylinder block (15) around an outer periphery and fixedly secured to the first housing section (1a), wherein an annular resilient member (29), an annular supporting member (24) and an annular shoe holder (27) are inserted in the second housing section (1b) sequentially. A plurality of pistons (21) each having a shoe (25) connected pivotally at one end are inserted into the cylinders (13), respectively, of the cylinder block (15) through retaining holes (27a), respectively, formed in the annular shoe holder (27). A swash plate (23) is inserted into the second housing section (1b) such that one lateral surface thereof bears against the shoes (25) with an outer peripheral portion of the swash plate (23) bearing against an end surface of the annular supporting member (24). A third housing section (1c) supporting the rotatable shaft (3) is attached to the second housing section (1b) and then a bracket (8) incorporating an input shaft (11) and a magnetic coupling (9) is attached to the third housing section (1c).

A fuel injection system includes a vane-type fuel pump. The fuel pump has a first bypass passage with a first pressure relief valve for relieving pressurized fuel from a discharge passage downstream of a check valve to the discharge passage upstream of the check valve so that excess pressure in the discharge passage downstream of the check valve can be relieved to the discharge pressure upstream of the check valve. Therefore, fuel leakage through a fuel injection valve can be prevented for avoiding possibility of formation of overrich mixture even upon hot start condition.

A mixture preparation apparatus for mixture-compressing, externally ignited internal combustion engines, which serves to improve the output and to reduce both fuel consumption and the proportion of toxic components in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. The mixture preparation apparatus comprises a rotatable vane body having vanes, or scoop members, disposed in the air intake line across the air flow direction, and including a portion arranged to extend into a section of the air intake line. The rotatable scoops are disposed in the region of an annular flow channel, so that between the inflow and the outflow side of the flow channel a constant, yet arbitrarily variable pressure difference can be regulated. The structure revealed requires only a small air component to drive the vane body, and thus only a limited energy requirement is present. The axial displacement motion of the vane body or of a cover body connected to the vane body represents a standard for the induced air quantity and can serve to control a fuel apportionment apparatus.

An improved pump and motor assembly is utilized to regulate a flow of fuel to an internal combustion engine. All of the fluid connections to the pump are connected with one end of the assembly. The pump and motor are both enclosed within a one-piece casing having a tubular side wall which is integrally formed with an end wall. The end section to which all of the fluid connections for the pump are made, is connected across the open end of the tubular side wall. To provide for the removal of vapor bubbles from the fuel, fuel supplied under pressure from the tank flows through an inlet cavity which circumscribes the pump and has an axial extent which is equal to the length of the pump. In addition, a screen at the inlet of the pump itself blocks the flow of vapor bubbles from the inlet cavity to the pump. The forces applied against opposite sides of the moving components of the pump by the inlet fluid are substantially balanced. Fluid pressure pulses in fuel discharged from the pump are dampened in an outlet cavity by a seal member which sealingly engages an outer cheek plate of the pump to separate the inlet and outlet cavities. A single spring element is utilized to perform the dual functions of pressing the seal member into engagement with the outer cheek plate of the pump and to press the outer cheek plate and cam ring against the inner cheek plate.

A fuel-air proportioning and mixing system for internal combustion engines is disclosed comprising a variable orifice for measuring the volume of air and a motor driven variable volume displacement pump for measuring and atomizing fuel. Changes in size of the variable orifice in response to variations of air volume furnishes energy to modulate the fuel supply to predetermined ratios with continuous correction for air temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. Electric motor also provides energy to atomize the fuel and mix it uniformly with air passing to engine intake manifold. The fuel-air ratio is controlled from the most economical to the most powerful in response to engine output load.A variation of the device to accommodate stratified charge engines provides two air fuel ratios -- an ideal mixture for ignition, and a lean mixture automatically variable with torque requirements for the main combustion charge.Other functions provided include automatic enrichment of mixture for cold starting, controlled deceleration of engine speed to prevent stalling, automatic enrichment of mixture if idle speed declines below a predetermined setting, curtailment of fuel supply while decelerating or coasting above a predetermined engine speed, and a complete cut-off of fuel supply with ignition to prevent dieseling. Since there is no float chamber, percolation and vapor lock are eliminated.

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine wherein fuel is pumped at a low pressure into a nozzle disposed within and extending across the intake manifold. The fuel is metered at the metering valve in response to the opening of the throttle valve in the intake manifold to provide a fuel/air ratio affording the proper operation of the internal combustion engine. The metering valve preferably has an electrically operated shutoff valve operated by the ignition switch of an automobile to close the fuel line in advance of the metering valve when the engine is shut off to avoid a surge of fuel from the pump from entering the engine. The fuel is pumped to the metering valve by a suitable fuel pump which pumps the fuel through a pressure regulator into the fuel line leading to the metering valve. A port injector nozzle which extends across the inside cylindrical area of the manifold has a plurality of restricted bores positioned in spaced relation along the length of the generally cylindrical shaped nozzle. The air flow about the nozzle reduces the pressure on the downstream side of the nozzle drawing fuel from the nozzle and vaporizing the fuel. An idle passageway formed in the wall of the intake manifold opens into the intake manifold adjacent an edge of the throttle valve such that the fuel entering the engine during idle operation is also drawn from the idle passageway and atomized before it is carried into the engine intake manifold.
