A gypsum-based composite structure is prepared from a slurry comprising a mixture of calcium sulfate hemihydrate, a cellulose ether additive other than CMC and an amount of water that is sufficient to form a slurry. The calcium sulfate hemihydrate is hydrated by the water forming a wallboard core reinforced by the cellulose ether additive. The concentration, viscosity grade and degree of substitution of the cellulose ether are selected to give the composite improved nail pull resistance and greater flexural strength.

A reinforced wallboard core is prepared from a slurry comprising a mixture of null-calcium sulfate hemihydrate, a cellulose ether additive other than CMC and an amount of water that is sufficient to form a slurry and resulting in a wallboard density of less than 0.8 g/cc. The null-calcium sulfate hemihydrate is hydrated by the water forming a wallboard core reinforced by the cellulose ether additive. The cellulose ether, having a molecular weight of at least about 20,000 and a viscosity grade of at least about 100 cps, is selected to give the reinforced wallboard core improved nail pull resistance and greater flexural strength than unreinforced wallboard of the same density. The reinforced wallboard core may be used for reduced-paper wallboard and/or for lightweight wallboard, for example.

A process for producing a composition containing at least a thermoplastic resin and/or rubber and a filler which comprises melt kneading at least a thermoplastic resin and/or rubber and a compressed filler by the use of a kneading extruder which is composed of a twin-screw kneading portion equipped with screws each having an L/D (ratio of length to diameter) of at least 12 in a twin-screw portion, and equipped at an end of the twin-screw portion with a damming structure, and of a single-screw extrusion portion. It is made possible by the above process to produce in high productivity, a filler-containing composition well balanced in physical properties.

The present invention relates to the fabrication of low cost, in situ, porous metallic, ceramic and cermet foam structures having improved mechanical properties such as energy absorption and specific stiffness. Methods of fabricating the structures from compositions including ceramic and/or metallic powders are provided. The flowable compositions also include an immiscible phase that results in pores within the final structure. Furthermore, the structures may be shaped to have external porosity, such as with mesh-like structures.

A nonionic water-soluble cellulose ether is characterized in that when 3 pbw of the nonionic water-soluble cellulose ether is added to a mixture of 90 pbw of cordierite, 10 pbw of ordinary Portland cement, and 33 pbw of water, immediately followed by kneading at 20null C. and 20 rpm, a maximum torque for kneading is reached within 180 seconds from the addition. It is suitable as an admixture for extrudable hydraulic compositions. The hydraulic composition to which the inventive admixture is added can be kneaded within a brief time into a uniform mass which is smoothly extrudable.
