    摘要: A viscosity modifier for lubricating oils or an additive composition for lubricating oils, which is excellent in oil-thickening properties and can provide lubricating oil compositions excellent in low-temperature characteristics and handleability at low temperatures; and lubricating oil compositions excellent in low-temperature characteristics and handleability at low temperatures. The viscosity modifier comprises an ethylene/α-olefin copolymer (B) which comprises (i) a structural unit derived from ethylene, (ii) a structural unit derived from an α-olefin having 3 to 19 carbon atoms, and (iii) a structural unit derived from a higher α-olefin having 4 to 20 carbon atoms whose carbon number is by one or more larger than that of the α-olefin having the unit (ii) which has the following properties of (1) and (2): (1) the contents of units (i), (ii) and (iii) are 25-49 mol %, 15-55 mol %, and 9-40 mol % respectively (with the proviso that the total of the units (i), (ii), and (iii) is 100 mol %) and (2) the intrinsic viscosity [η] is 0.5 to 5.0 dl/g.

    摘要: An ultrahigh molecular weight polymer, such as ultrahigh molecular weight polyisobutylene, is used as an additive to enhance the coating properties of a solvent. The polyisobutylene has a molecular weight of at least 2.5-3.0 million daltons, preferably greater than about 6 daltons, and is provided in a preferred concentration of 0.05 to 0.3%. The solvent can be a medicinal grade mineral oil. Other suitable solvents include hydrocarbon oil and low viscosity, synthetic compositions. In all cases, the coating properties of the solvent are greatly enhanced by the addition of ultrahigh molecular weight polyisobutylene. In another aspect of the invention, ultrahigh molecular weight polyisobutylene is used as an additive to enhance the viscoelasticity of a mineral oil based sunscreen formulation. In still another aspect of the invention, the fibers of a fabric material are coated with an ultrahigh molecular weight polymer to greatly strengthen the fabric. Other applications include improved automobile polishes and paint sealers, rust removers, and leather treatments.

    摘要: Petroleum quench oils effective for high speed cooling of heated metals and metal hardening are disclosed. The petroleum quench oils contain natural or synthetic base oils having a minimum flash point of about 120° C. and a combination of poly(iso)alkylene and poly(iso)alkylene succinic anhydride or succinic acid. A method for cooling heated metal to harden it, improve the metallurgical consistency, improve machinability and reduce residue on quenched metal parts is also disclosed comprising quenching the heated metal part in a quench oil containing natural or synthetic base oils having a minimum flash point of about 120° C. and a combination of poly(iso)alkylene and poly(iso)alkylene succinic anhydride or succinic acid.
