    摘要: A tape head module assembly system is disclosed. A first and second module holder are placed in an initial alignment with module holder ends facing each other, the module ends each holding a tape head module. A tape wrap angle between the first and second module is set by first performing a fringe alignment and then lifting a rear end of the first and second module holder a prescribed amount. A horizontal adjuster produces a rotation for the first module holder so that gaps between the first and second modules are parallel. An alignment along a longitudinal axis for the second module holder is selected and the second module is translated laterally until the second tape head module held by the second module holder is aligned with the first tape head module held by the first module holder to provide reader-opposite-writer track-to-track registration. Then, the first and second tape head modules are joined together using a joining agent in the gap between the first and second tape head modules.

    摘要: Thermal pole tip protrusion is caused by the materials in and around the head slider expanding during write operations till part of those materials protrude, leading to contact with the rotating disk surface, altering the flying height and often wearing down part of the disk surface. While it is well known that read-write heads expand during writing, the inventors are unaware of anyone else who recognized this situation's significance, particularly as the flying height decreases and the data rates increase, both of which are required for high areal density disk drives. The inventors realized that they could detect the problem at the spin stand level by testing head gimbal assemblies to reliably, and inexpensively, predict the tendency for thermal pole tip protrusion. This leads to selection of head gimbal assemblies, which do not have the thermal pole tip protrusion tendency. The selected head gimbal assemblies have better reliability, as do actuators and disk drives made with the selected head gimbal assemblies.

The disc pack, E-block and magnet are moved together, maintaining the merged interrelationship, to the basedeck and fastened to the basedeck.

In one embodiment, the boss includes a plurality of raised portions defining a cylinder having a relaxed outer diameter greater than the inner diameter of the opening in the actuator arm. The outer surfaces of the plurality of portions engage the inner surface of the actuator arm to elastically deform and conform to and bias against the inner surface of the actuator arm, thereby providing a connection with superior holding friction, and retention torque.

    摘要: A nonmagnetic holder is made having a plurality of precisely located parallel grooves. Each groove has a reference lateral surface provided therein. Individual magnetic transducers are inserted in each groove with a lateral surface abutting the reference lateral surface within that groove. The transducers are preferably made by well known batch fabrication techiques. A locating element, such as a leaf spring, is provided in each groove to urge the transducer core against the reference surface and to firmly hold the transducer in a desired position during alignment and assembly. The modular structure allows inspecting the individual transducers for mechanical or electrical damages and their replacement, if necessary, prior to the final assembly. The multichannel head is then integrally joined together, for example by bonding. The rejection rate of the resulting modular multichannel head is significantly reduced.
