Composition for imparting desirable properties to fabric on clothes comprising a water-soluble or dispersible adhesive such as a gum or polymeric resin and at least one adjuvant, capable of imparting desirable properties to the fabric on clothes such as a fabric softener, for example. The composition is quickly disintegrable upon application of heat and moisture to release the adjuvant on the fabric on clothes while leaving substantially no residue of gum thereon or in the surrounding environment, such as a clothes dryer. It can be in a foamed or unfoamed condition but is preferably foamed and made by mixing the constituents, that is, the gum and adjuvant, and then whipping the mixture where a foam is desired and subsequently drying the mixture to form the composition.

A durably soil-resistant carpet is provided which comprises a plurality of organic fibers having thereon a normally solid coating comprising (a) at least one phase of a water-insoluble addition polymer derived from a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer free of non-vinylic fluorine, the polymer having at least one major transition temperature higher than about 45* C. and a solubility parameter of at least about 8.5, and (b) at least one phase of a water-insoluble fluorinated component containing a fluoroaliphatic radical of at least 3 carbon atoms, the fluorinated component having at least one major transition temperature higher than about 45* C.; and at least one of said phases being a continuous phase. Novel compositions and processes for the treatment of carpets to render them durably soil resistant are also provided.

Novel fluoroalkyl ethers, typically (CF3)2CF-O-CH2-CH2-Br, are prepared by reacting a ketone with an alkali metal fluoride, then reacting the resulting intermediate with a dihaloethane. These ethers may be dehydrohalogenated by reaction with alcoholic KOH to yield the corresponding fluoroalkyl vinyl ethers, e.g., (CF3)2CF-O-CH=CH2. The vinyl derivatives are useful for providing oil- and water-repellent coatings on fibrous materials, e.g., fabrics.

A method of treating fibrous materials to render them more amenable to subsequent textile and papermaking processes employing aqueous media which comprises: treating fibrous materials with a softening and swelling agent whereby the individual fibers become soft, limp and swollen; exposing said fibrous materials to textile or papermaking processes employing aqueous media wherein the individual fibers show less tendency toward undesirable fiber agglomeration, exhibit greater tendency toward fiber individualization, and demonstrate enhanced response and receptivity to fiber processing or manipulation because of their soft, limp and swollen nature; and forming a nonwoven fabric of the individual fibers. Also included are methods combining (1) the treating of the fibrous materials with the softening and swelling agent and (2) the textile processes into a single operation.

Bonded fibrous nonwoven textile fabrics having excellent strength and textile-like softness, drape and hand which are intermittently bonded with synthetic resins in predetermined print patterns of binder areas having a relatively high, uniform concentration of from about 50 percent to about 120 percent by weight of resin binder in the binder areas, based on the weight of the fibers therein, said binder areas having very sharply defined borders or edges with a minimum of binder feathering thereat whereby the optical density of the bonded fibrous nonwoven textile fabric very sharply increases from substantially zero to a maximum of at least from about 0.6 to about 1.0 or greater in a distance of less than about 1 mm. (0.04 inch), and methods of depositing such synthetic resins from colloidal aqueous dispersions thereof into wet fibrous webs to form the bonded fibrous nonwoven textile fabrics, comprising the use of (1) metal complex coordination compounds and (2) synthetic resins and/or surfactants, at least one of which contains a specific coordinating ligand capable of being affected by ions or said metals to control the total migration of the resin binder during such deposition.
