A combustion chamber formed by a recess in the piston of an internal combustion engine is divided by restrictions into two or more partial chambers. The ratio between the minimum distance in the area of the restrictions and the maximum distance in concave areas of the wall of the combustion chamber, as measured from the axis of the combustion chamber, is between 0.2 and 0.5. In the area of the minimum distance downstream of the restriction, the wall of each partial chamber is inclined relative to the axis of the combustion chamber, the inclination decreasing continuously in downstream direction. To achieve extremely lean operation with low exhaust emissions, the fuel injection device is located in a position eccentric to the center of the combustion chamber, and the ignition device is located approximately in the center of the combustion chamber. The restrictions of the piston recess are provided with guide faces located approximately parallel to the axis of the combustion chamber and directed towards the center of the combustion chamber, the smallest distance of these guide faces from the center of the combustion chamber being 0-0.2 times the piston diameter.

An emission control method is disclosed for the current, conventional, piston type, spark ignition, gasoline or equivalent fueled internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder. The method of the present invention increases the engine's fuel economy upwards of 70% from its current level. The emission control method being accomplished by engine modifications including a dual induction system adapted to provide to the engine a relatively low (lean) fuel content and therefore a relatively low power fuel-air mixture. This accomplishes an increased fuel economy and a substantially emission free exhaust, as pertains to the fuel alone. The dual induction system includes a heated intake supplying all of the fuel to the engine in a highly-heated state and a small percentage of the total inducted air, equally as highly heated. The dual induction system also includes an unheated and relatively much larger capacity cold air intake adapted to supply all of the unheated air inducted by the engine. The dual induction system enables a fuel-air mixture to be concentrated near the cylinder's usual spark plug to achieve a localized, initial, combustible charge thereat. Additionally, the unheated air intake of the dual induction system allows, in part, the engine's piston speed to be economically increased substantially beyond the conventional 3000 feet per minute commercial limit for adequately durable sliding piston reciprocating speed, and, an associated increase of the engine's crankshaft speed, to recover the potential engine power lost by the use of only the relatively low power mixture used in reducing the emissions. The modified engine includes also, a crosshead assembly associated with the dynamic action between said piston and the cylinder, which enables the modified engine to operate indefinitely at the power output and speed increases, or, as limited by sources other than the crosshead assembly associated with the dynamic action.

An engine control system includes a microprocessor responsive to engine operating parameters for developing control words representing a desired dwell and firing time for use in controlling engine spark timing. An engine control unit is coupled to the microprocessor and utilizes the control words in calculating the desired rise and fall of the spark timing output relative to reference pulses, indicative to engine crankshaft position. The engine control unit includes a free-running counter which serves as a time reference for determining the period of the input reference pulses and for predicting the time of rise and fall of the output. Prediction of the next rise is made when the output falls and prediction of next fall is made when the output rises. Predictions are made on the assumption of constant frequency reference pulses. Errors resulting from this assumption are corrected when a reference pulse occurs.
