A sensor wire system with an integrated power source and wireless transmission is provided. A sensor wire includes a distal end that is inserted into a blood vessel of a patient's body. A sensor that is mounted at the distal end of the sensor wire and an electronics unit of the distal end of the sensor wire transmit information generated by the sensor to a receiver unit outside of the patient's body wirelessly. The system further includes a power source, which in one example is mounted to the distal end of the sensor wire, that supplies power to the electronics unit. Preferably the wire body functions as an antenna for the wireless broadcasting.

A near infrared (NIR) semiconductor laser system is shown for gas sensing. An embodiment is centered on the use of a system with a much wider tunable laser, which today has a scan band of more than 150 nanometers (nm) to as much as 250 nm or more. In some cases the scan band is about 400 nm or more. This is achieved in the current embodiment through the use of a widely tunable microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based Fabry-Perot filter as an integral part of the laser cavity. Using this technology, these systems are capable of capturing a variety of gases in the any of the well-known spectroscopic scan bands, such as the OH, NH or CH. For example, a single laser with a 250 nm scan band window between 1550-1800 nm can capture ten or as many as twenty hydrocarbon-based gases simultaneously.

A fixed wavelength, external cavity semiconductor laser comprises a semiconductor laser gain medium and an intra-cavity filter having a filter function specifying a frequency of operation of the laser. This distinguishes it from distributed feedback Bragg reflector systems in which the wavelength of operation is dictated by the semiconductor Bragg grating, drive current, and temperature. A cavity length modulation system is further provided that modulates an optical length of the cavity to change the spectral locations of longitudinal modes of the cavity relative to the filter function. One important advantage of the present invention is that it can be deployed without a thermoelectric (TE) cooler. Specifically, the intra-cavity filter material in combination with the cavity length controller, allow a mode of cavity to be located at the filter function. Thus, the temperature of the module can fluctuate with ambient temperature or other operating parameters, but the wavelength is held stable with single longitudinal mode operation of the module being guaranteed.

A process for patterning dielectric layers of the type typically found in optical coatings in the context of MEMS manufacturing is disclosed. A dielectric coating is deposited over a device layer, which has or will be released, and patterned using a mask layer. In one example, the coating is etched using the mask layer as a protection layer. In another example, a lift-off process is shown. The primary advantage of photolithographic patterning of the dielectric layers in optical MEMS devices is that higher levels of consistency can be achieved in fabrication, such as size, location, and residual material stress. Competing techniques such as shadow masking yield lower quality features and are difficult to align. Further, the minimum feature size that can be obtained with shadow masks is limited to ˜100 &mgr;m, depending on the coating system geometry, and they require hard contact with the surface of the wafer, which can lead to damage and/or particulate contamination.

An integrated optical monitoring system comprises a hermetic package and an optical bench sealed within a package. An optical fiber pigtail enters the package via a feed-through to connect and terminate above the bench. A tunable filter is connected to the top of the bench and filters an optical signal transmitted by the fiber pigtail. A detector, also connected to the bench, detects the filtered signal from the tunable filter. Thus, the entire system is integrated together, on a single bench within a preferably small package. This configuration makes the system useful as a subsystem, for example, in a larger system offering higher levels of functionality and optical signal processing capability.

Tabs or stops are integrated into a membrane structure to prevent its snapdown. Features comprising two surfaces separated by a distance equal to the maximum desired range of movement are produced. When the two surfaces contact, the motion of the structure is arrested or greatly diminished by increasing its rigidity. For an electrostatically actuated MEMS structure, these features can be used to limit the range of motion such that pull-in or snapdown is avoided, greatly enhancing the reliability of the device. One key design feature is that the two contacting surfaces are maintained at the same electrical potential avoiding problems associated with electrostatic cavity discharge.

A zipper actuator for optical beam control has an optical port formed through the substrate. The cantilevered beam of the actuator preferably includes a paddle for switching the optical signal. Mirror structures can be provided on the paddle for beam switching. In some embodiments, MEMS or electrode latches are further provided.
