    摘要: Super lattice structures in conjunction with a tunnel junction to provide an improved contact for multiple components. The tunnel junctions can include a first semiconductor material having a resistance parameter for conducting a current and a second semiconductor material having a resistance parameter that is more restrictive to conduction of a current than the resistance parameter of the first semiconductor material. The first semiconductor material can have a critical thickness at which lattice matching of the first semiconductor material causes dislocation. The second semiconductor material can have a critical thickness at which lattice matching of the second semiconductor material causes dislocation that is thicker than the critical thickness of the first semiconductor material. The tunnel junction can be used in a monolithically manufactured photo transmitter and receiver design.

    摘要: An integral vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) and power monitor assembly. The assembly is beneficially fabricated by anisotropically etching a silicon substrate having substantially flat top and bottom surfaces to form a cavity defined by an inwardly sloping wall that extends through the silicon substrate, beneficially to a membrane. A photodetector (light sensor) is formed adjacent the cavity (such as on a membrane), and a VCSEL is attached to the silicon substrate such that light from the VCSEL irradiates the photodetector. Beneficially, the photodetector is a metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector. An optical element (a lens) and the end of an optical fiber are beneficially located in the cavity. The optical element couples light that passes through the photodetector into the optical fiber.

    摘要: A receptacle for terminating an optical fiber at an active device such as a photodetector or solid-state light source. The receptacle includes a housing, a termination fixture and an active device. The housing has an opening for receiving the terminal portion of an optical fiber, a door located at the opening, biased to a closed position and having a latch for releasably receiving an optical fiber plug, and a removable plate allowing access to an interior of the housing. The termination fixture and the active device may be mounted to a common substrate attached to an interior portion of the housing. The termination fixture includes a base and a projection attached to the base proximate a light-transmitting portion thereof, the projection having a fiber-receiving groove directed toward a fiber stop surface located on the light-transmitting portion of the base. The base can have a lens integrally molded with the light-transmitting portion. The active device is positioned with respect to the termination fixture to receive light from, and/or transmit light to, any fiber whose terminal portion is located in the V-groove and abutting the fiber stop. An optional optical plate may be used to adjust the optical characteristics of the termination fixture.

    摘要: A vertical cavity surface emitting laser having intensity control for maintaining a constant proportional output under varying conditions of the laser. A tilted window is situated over the laser output to reflect a portion of the light to a photo detector area. Signals representing light on the photo detector go to a feedback circuit which controls the power output of the laser. The tilted window has a metallic coating for partial reflection and for minimizing polarization effects on reflected and transmitted light. The photo detector has an anti-reflective coating for likewise minimizing polarization effects of the detected light. The VCSEL and photo detector are situated on the same substrate.

    摘要: A light emitting device is provided with mirrors placed on opposite sides of the source of light and spaced apart by a distance that is determined as a function of the wavelength of the light emitted by the light source. One particular embodiment of the present invention spaces the mirrors apart by a distance equal to n.lambda./2+.lambda./4, where n is an integer value that is maintained as small as possible within practical constraints. The close proximity of the mirrors and their particular spacing which is determined as a function of the wavelength inhibits undesirable modes of light emission in directions toward the mirrors. This inhibition of light in undesirable modes perpendicular to the mirrors enhances the production of light in modes that are parallel to the mirror surfaces. The overall light output efficiency of the device is enhanced through the inhibition of these undesirable modes.

A lower mirror is connected to the active region. A grating layer is deposited to the upper mirror. The grating layer includes a low index of refraction layer formed by deposition on the upper mirror. The grating layer further includes a high index of refraction layer formed by deposition on the low index of refraction layer. A grating is formed into the grating layer.

In some embodiments, optical signals from two or more optical emitters are directed at different regions of a photo detector. The photo detector may include two or more spaced contacts that are adapted to receive different contributions of photo current from each of the optical signals. By monitoring the photo currents in the two or more spaced contacts, a measure of the optical power of each of the optical signals may be determined.

    摘要: A light sensor comprises two light sensitive areas that are shaped to physically compensate for the decrease in light intensity resulting from movement of a movable object in which an aperture is formed. Movement of the aperture causes the light passing through the aperture to have a decreased circumscribed angle that results in a decrease of light intensity impinging on a light sensitive component. In order to avoid the nonlinearity that can result from the decrease in light intensity as a function of the physical position of a movable object being sensed, the light sensitive areas are tapered by selecting the width of the light sensitive area as a function of the distance from a reference line. The light sensitive areas are tapered by arranging the edges of the areas so that the minimum width of each of two light sensitive areas are abutting each other at the reference line and the edges of both light sensitive areas are tapered outward away from each other at positions farther from the reference line.
