A method of correcting spinal deformity, which includes locating pharmaceutical-loaded implants adjacent to targeted spinal growth plates, and then eluting the pharmaceutical onto the growth plates. Preferably, the method involves correcting spinal deformity by simply inserting a pharmaceutical-eluting pedicle screw onto the concave side of a scoliotic curve. In some embodiments, the screw has a cannulated internal reservoir that contains a growth-inhibiting pharmaceutical (such as a tetracycline) and at least one fenestration that allows the pharmaceutical to elute onto the vertebral body growth plate.

A mandrel is inserted into the tissue to be distracted and a filament is repeatedly wrapped around the mandrel to make a spool. As the mandrel turns, the filament coils around the mandrel to create of spool of increasing diameter. This spool can be used as a distractor, tamp, or implant. A spool implant can be cemented to further stabilize the device in situ, such as a vertebral body. The filament deposition upon the mandrel is controlled by rotation and the volume creation is incremental. This makes the spool ideal for creating highly controlled distraction forces or insertion of bulking material. In some embodiments, fibers having a low glass transition temperature are used.

Methods and devices are provided for replacing a nucleus of a spinal disc, and in particular for preventing nucleus disc replacement expulsion. The nucleus of a spinal disc can be removed from the annulus by forming a small opening in the annulus. Once the nucleus is removed, one or more insert devices can be implanted within the annulus of a spinal disc and they can be mated to one or both endplates of the adjacent vertebrae. The insert(s) is configured to interact with a nucleus disc replacement implant to prevent expulsion of the implant from the annulus.

In one embodiment the joint prosthesis system is a knee joint prosthesis and the two components are a tibial tray and a tibial bearing insert. The tibial bearing insert includes a mating stem that has one or more positive surface features on its exterior surface. The positive surface features mate with axial slot(s) formed in a mating cavity of the tibial tray to enable insertion of the mating stem within the mating cavity. Upon insertion the positive surface features are engaged by a circumferential groove disposed distally of the axial slot(s). Misalignment of the positive surface features and the axial slot(s) enables proper orientation of the tibial tray and tibial bearing insert, and provides axial securement of the two components.

An augmentation system for an implantable bone prosthesis, such as a femoral component of a knee joint prosthesis, includes an augmenting block having an aperture disposed therein. A collet having an expandable distal end, extending beyond one surface of the augmenting block, is positioned within the aperture. The proximal end of the collet includes a cavity that receives an expansion pin that is adapted to communicate with the collet to expand the collet. The distal end of the collet is adapted to fit within a mounting cavity of a joint prosthesis. With the augmenting block placed on the appropriate surface of the joint prosthesis, the distal end of the collet is positioned within the mounting cavity. Advancement of the expansion pin causes the distal end of the collet to expand, thus frictionally and/or mechanically engaging the interior walls of the mounting cavity to firmly secure the augmenting system to the prosthesis. The expansion pin can include threads which mate with corresponding threads within the cavity of the collet. Alternatively, the pin and collet cavity can include ratchet and pawl-like surface features.

A modular joint prosthesis system includes an articulation member, such as a cruciate retaining femoral component of a knee joint prosthesis, having a superior bone engaging surface, an inferior articulation surface and one or more fixation pegs extending from the superior surface. An augmentation block mounts on the superior surface of the articulation member and has an aperture surrounding a respective fixation peg. The system further includes a compression collet seated between the aperture of the augmentation block and the fixation peg. In assembly, a securement device mounted over the fixation peg compresses the compression collet so as to engage the fixation peg and maintain the augmentation block on the articulation member.
