The present invention relates to a process for producing scratch-resistant coatings which comprises applying a coating composition which in the cured state has a storage modulus E′ in the rubber-elastic range of at least 107.6 Pa and a loss factor tan &dgr; at 20° C. of not more than 0.10, the storage modulus E′0 and the loss factor having been measured by dynamic mechanical thermoanalysis on homogeneous free films having a film thickness of 40±10 &mgr;m. The present invention additionally relates to the use of the process for producing multicoat finishes and also to coating compositions suitable for this process.

A stain/topcoat system for non-porous thermoset and/or thermoplastic articles comprises a pigmented stain having substantially only a single binder resin which promotes adherence of a topcoat, and a topcoat which is an aqueous dispersion of a film forming polymer and a curable organopolysiloxane microemulsion. The topcoat displays exceptional adhesion and weatherability to pigmented stained surfaces.

Cured thermoset multilayered composite coatings with a powder clear coat and a waterborne base coat have improved chip resistance for the coating. The waterborne base coat composition has one or more crosslinkable film-forming polymers, one or more crosslinking agents for crosslinking the film-forming polymer, and one or more pigments. This basecoat is applied to a bare or previously painted substrate to give a film thickness in the range of about 0.1 to 3 mils (2.54 to 76.2 microns). The basecoat is dehydrated from treatment at a temperature from ambient to an elevated temperature of up to about 90.degree. C. for up to about 15 minutes before it is contacted with powder clear coating composition. The powder clear coating composition has a predominant amount of one or more crosslinkable, meltable and mobile film-forming polymer and/or copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of one or polymers/copolymers in the range of about 2000 to about 6000. The film-forming polymer or copolymer has an amount of functionality for crosslinking of at least 40 weight percent of the total resin solids for the polymers. The glass transition temperature for the powder coating composition is at least about 25.degree. C. The powder coating composition for the clear coat also has one or more crosslinking agents and when cured has a film thickness in the range of about 35 to about 100 microns. The basecoat and clear coat are co-cured. Optionally, one or more primer coats may be beneath the basecoat.

Self-crosslinkable film-forming compositions and a process for preparing multi-layered coated articles coated with a pigmented or colored base coat and a transparent or clear topcoat containing a self-crosslinkable film-forming composition are disclosed. The self-crosslinkable film-forming composition comprises a non-gelled addition polymer which is the free radical initiated reaction product of an N-alkoxymethyl(meth)acrylamide and at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The topcoat composition may be aqueous based. The transparent topcoat provides a composite coating with improved acid etch resistance and mar resistance, making the composite coating particularly useful as a topcoat for automotive parts.

Aqueous-based basecoat compositions, useful for application to metal and/or plastic substrates, comprise an anionic polyurethane principal resin and an anionic acrylic pigment grind resin. The compositions are particularly adapted to application to substrates over a wide range of ambient humidities and have quick drying characteristics. The incorporation of an anionic acrylic grind resin, which is compatible with the anionic polyurethane principal resin, produces a coating which has good pigment wetting and dispersion characteristics with improved shelf life and color stability.

This invention relates to a multilayer coating system derived from Titanium dioxide free aqueous coating compositions. The multilayer coating system comprises at least two layers including a layer of base coating which provides good hiding function for substrates and a second layer of clear top coating which provides surface protection functions for the coating system. The base coating composition comprises an opaque (co)polymer having at least one void per (co)polymer particle. The top coating composition comprises a duller (co)polymer chosen from a multi-stage (co)polymer, a single stage crosslinked (co)polymer, and mixtures thereof.
