The fuel spray having the strong penetration force is injected in a vicinity of an ignition plug. Accordingly, a fuel adhesion to the piston can be reduced and further a reduction of a discharge HC and a fuel consumption can be improved.

Control of the flow of residual gas between the combustion chamber and intake or exhaust port and thus its temperature by the valve timing strategy, in turn, is used to control the temperature of the fresh air/residual gas/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber (12) and thus autoignition timing in response to a change in engine torque.

The present invention relates to a method of controlling the combustion by autoignition of a homogeneous fuel mixture for an internal-combustion engine comprising a combustion chamber in which a stage of slow oxidation of said mixture occurs prior to the combustion of this mixture. According to the invention, a determined amount of fuel is fed into the combustion chamber during the slow oxidation of the mixture so as to lengthen this oxidation stage.
