Ambient temperature curing compositions comprising a hydroxyl component and an anhydride component are disclosed. Cure is accelerated by the presence of an onium compound. The compositions are useful in the formulation and application of coatings.
Abstract:
In the adhesion of metallic materials to polymers, new adhesive agents of nitrogen containing hetrocyclic polymers such as compositions of imidazole-pyrridine, pyrrolidone-pyridine, and imidazole-pyrrolidone solutions have been discovered as useful. These agents also exhibit anti-corrosion effects. Adhesion and/or reduction of anti-corrosion can be accomplished by pre-coating the metal material with at least one of these agents prior to applying the polymer, or by preblending the polymer with at least one of these agents followed by applying the blend to the metal, under suitable conditions.
Abstract:
In one aspect, this invention is a primer comprising a solution of: (a) a polyester resin of a carboxylic acid and a glycol; (b) a polymethylene poly(phenyl isocyanate), diphenylmethane diisocyanate, or mixture thereof; and (c) a silane-containing moiety; in a solvent mixture comprising: (i) a high boiling polar solvent; (ii) an oxygenated solvent; and (iii) an aromatic solvent; wherein the weight ratio of (a):(b) is in the range of from about 0.25:1.0 to 2.0:1.0. In a second aspect, this invention is a primer comprising a solution of: (a) 5-50% of a polyester resin of a carboxylic acid and a glycol; (b) 5-50% of a polymethylene poly(phenyl isocyanate), diphenylmethane diisocyanate, or mixture thereof; (c) 0.1-50% of a silane-containing moiety; (d) 0.1-50% of a high boiling polar solvent; (e) 10-70% of an oxygenated solvent; and (f) 1-50% of an aromatic solvent. It has been discovered that the primer of the invention advantageously provides improved adhesion characteristics of metal-to-glass bonding when used to prime acid resistant paint-coated metal substrates before applying a urethane adhesive, particularly when used with a "fast cure" adhesive comprising an isocyanate-functional prepolymer and dimorpholinediethyl ether.
Abstract:
A thermosetting coating composition is provided, which composition is based upon (A) an activated unsaturated group-containing compound, (B) an activated CH group-containing compound and (C) a strong basic catalyst, wherein the strong basic catalyst is blocked with a [particular] carboxylic acid which is volatile and/or undergoes decarboxylation under curing conditions. These coating compositions possess extended potlife, good curing speed, and a good balance of physical and mechanical properties making them especially well suited for a variety of coatings uses such as in paint, impregnating, sealing and bonding compositions.

Abstract:
A coated article with metallic finish which comprises a base layer of a paint containing metallic powder and, if necessary, color pigment applied to the substrate and a topcoat applied to said base layer, said topcoat being formed by applying and curing a coating material composed mainly of a silyl group-containing vinyl polymer or copolymer having the main chain composed substantially of a vinyl polymer and at least one silicon atom connected to a hydrolyzable group at the terminal or side chain per molecule.
Abstract:
An aqueous selfcrosslinkable coating composition which comprises an aqueous dispersion of at least one vinyl polymer, wherein the polymer system constituting said at least one vinyl polymer has chain-pendant amine functional groups and chain-pendant carbonyl functional groups to provide a selfcrosslinking reaction during and/or after coating formation from the composition. The vinyl polymers having both amine and carbonyl groups are also claimed.
Abstract:
Water-soluble sulfonium salts are converted, without the elimination of odorous volatile by-products, to water-insoluble products useful as binders in coating formulations by heating a water-soluble cyclic sulfonium salt in which the sulfonium sulfur is bonded only to aliphatic carbons.
