Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for enhanced codec control. In one novel aspect, a method includes receiving a codec control command by a user equipment (UE) in a wireless network, determining if the recommended codec characteristic will be applied to a codec executing on the UE, and adjusting a characteristic of the codec executing on the UE based on the recommended codec characteristic. The UE is connected with a radio access network (RAN) and the codec control command includes a recommended codec characteristic. In another novel aspect, the recommended codec characteristic is a maximum bitrate. In another embodiment, the recommended codec characteristic is a type of codec. In yet another novel aspect, the recommended codec characteristic is a radio resource allocation command. In another novel aspect, the UE determines all available codec bitrates that can be performed by the UE and communicates the bitrates before receiving the codec control command.

Abstract: A method of supporting group communication over LTE MBMS is provided. A UE first establishes a unicast bearer in a network for group communication. The UE belongs to a communication group having a communication group ID. The UE receives access information from the network for monitoring downlink (DL) multicast traffic of the DL group communication based on a multicast decision. The UE is then ready for monitoring a multicast Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) bearer for receiving the DL multicast traffic. In one embodiment, The UE requests to switch the DL multicast traffic from the multicast MBMS bearer to the unicast bearer upon detecting that the UE is approaching an MBMS coverage boundary. In another embodiment, the UE transmits an indication of preferred target cells to the network before performing a handover and thereby maintaining multicast service continuity of the group communication.

Abstract: In an aspect of the disclosure, an apparatus is provided. The apparatus receives a downlink data packet and determines a service data flow associated with the downlink data packet. The apparatus extracts, from the downlink data packet, a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) Reflective QoS Indication (RQI) indicator that instructs the UE to map a service data flow to the QoS flow. The apparatus further extracts, from the downlink data packet, a Quality of Service (QoS) flow identifier identifying a QoS flow. The apparatus generates a first NAS mapping that maps the service data flow to the QoS flow, in response to a determination that the service data flow is not mapped to the QoS flow at the apparatus. The apparatus further transmits, in accordance with the first NAS mapping, an uplink data packet associated with the service data flow through the QoS flow.

Abstract: Enhanced paging mechanisms are proposed for Machine Type Communication (MTC) devices in 3GPP networks. First, adaptive paging is proposed to adaptively allocate extra paging occasions for MTC devices with no extra procedure or power consumption on normal UEs. Second, group paging is proposed to simultaneously page a plurality of MTC devices with one paging. Group paging is controlled in different levels for optimized signaling and easier management. In one embodiment, group broadcasting and group release are used. Third, paging with response policy is proposed to pre-define or dynamically configure paging response policies for MTC devices.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided to enhance BSR and LCP procedures for the dual connectivity system. In one novel aspect, the BSR is handled for each MAC entity according to one or more allocation rules. In one embodiment, the allocation rule is configured by the network. In another embodiment, the allocation rule is determined by the UE based on historic statics. In yet another embodiment, the allocation rule is determined by the UE based on information from the network. In one embodiment, the allocation rule indicates percentage of traffic allocated to each MAC entity. In another novel aspect, LCP is performed independently for each MAC entity if the split bearer is configured and the prioritized bit rate (PBR) and the bucket size duration (BSD) are signaled for each eNB. In one embodiment, separate sets of LCG variables are maintained independently for each MAC entity.

Abstract: LTE-WLAN aggregation (LWA) at the radio access network level promises significant gain in system capacity and user quality of experience (QoE). In order to support QoS over LWA, there is a need to develop mechanisms to ensure that the access category (AC) classification chosen by a wireless device (AP in the case of downlink, and UE in case of uplink) is consistent with the QoS requirements of the EPS bearer/DRB and/or subscriber profile to which the traffic belongs. The cellular LTE network can provision QoS for both downlink and uplink data flows that are transferred using LWA access.

Abstract: A method of uplink shaping and extending UE in RRC Idle Mode is proposed. The UE processes a data packet to be sent to the network. The data packet is associated with a traffic type. If the data packet belongs to a normal traffic type, then the UE enters RRC Connected mode and thereby transmitting the data packet to the network. If the data packet belongs to a background traffic type, then the UE buffers the data packet and the UE is prohibited from entering RRC Connected mode until a triggering condition is satisfied for uplink transmission. The proposed mechanism achieves power saving by reducing the activity of uplink transmission. In addition, the proposed mechanism also reduces signaling overhead to enhance network efficiency.

Abstract: A method of system information (SI) acquisition with reduced signaling overhead is proposed. To reduce SI broadcast overhead, the quantity of periodic SI broadcast and the frequency of on-demand SI acquisition need to be reduced. In order to reduce the quantity of periodic SI broadcasting, on-demand SI delivery is enabled. With on-demand SI delivery, signaling overhead is proportional to the frequency of SI acquisition. From the network side, the base stations proactively provide SI delivery options and delivers SI over unicast or scheduled broadcast. From the UE side, UE determines how to acquire SI, i.e., by listening to broadcast or by sending an on-demand request via existing procedures such as a random-access procedure over a random-access channel (RACH).

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for selection and data aggregation for the LWA. In one novel aspect, the UE connected with a first RAN receives a LWA assistance configuration and selects a second RAN based on the LWA assistance configuration. The UE aggregates data traffic from the first RAN and the selected second RAN. In one embodiment, the information request-and-response procedure is used, which allows the first RAN to query the UE about its second RAN association status. In another embodiment, the selection request-and-response procedure is used, which allows the first RAN to exercise some control over which base station of the second RAN is selected by the UE and for the UE to send relevant information about its second RAN connectivity to the first RAN. In another novel aspect, the UE selects a DRB based on the LWA DRB configuration through either a NAS procedure or an operator configuration.
