Nonwoven articles having high durability and absorbent-characteristics, and their methods of manufacture, are presented. One preferred article is characterized by(a) a nonwoven web comprised of organic fibers comprised of polymers having a plurality of pendant hydroxyl groups; and(b) a binder comprising an at least partially crosslinked and at least partially hydrolyzed polymeric resin having a plurality of pendant resin hydroxyl groups, the resin crosslinked by a crosslinking agent, the crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of organic titanates and amorphous metal oxides, the polymeric resin derived from monomers selected from the group consisting of monomers within the general formula ##STR1## wherein: X is selected from the group consisting of Si(OR.sup.4 OR.sup.5 OR.sup.6) and O(CO)R.sup.7 ; andR.sup.1 -R.sup.7 inclusive are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and organic radicals having from 1 to about 10 carbon atoms, inclusive, and combinations thereof.

A viral barrier composite of a thermoplastic film thermally bonded on at least one side thereof to a breathable thermoplastic web, and method for making the same. The viral barrier composite has viral barrier properties, a moisture vapor transmission rate of at least 700 g/m.sup.2 /24 hours and a bond strength between the thermoplastic film and breathable thermoplastic web of at least 0.07N/cm. The viral barrier composite is formed by calendering an assembly comprising a thermoplastic film and a breathable thermoplastic web between a smooth roll and a pattern roll. The viral barrier composite may be used for constructing articles of protective apparel.

A non-flowing composition and method for treatment of bacterial vaginosis are disclosed. An afflicted vagina is treated with a therapeutically effective but relatively low dose of metronidazole in a composition that includes a buffer system maintaining the composition at a pH value in the range of about 3.75 to about 4.25. The composition can also be used for prophylactic purposes.

A dental impression tray includes at least one array of solid state light emitters for curing photocurable impression material received in a channel of the tray. The tray includes a body presenting the channel, and a housing that is detachably connected to the body. The tray preferably includes a battery that extends along a buccolabial side of the tray body and as a result is received in the patient's oral cavity when an impression is taken.

A dispensing container, such as a double-barrel cartridge used in dispensing dental material, matingly receives a sliding cap that maintains a seal between material in the barrels and the atmosphere. The cap includes a body and a gasket within the body, and the cap also includes a cam portion that shifts the body slightly away from an outlet of the container as the cap is moved toward a closed position to seal the container. Once the cap is in a fully closed position, the cam portion enables the body to shift somewhat closer to the container outlet in order to increase the compression of the gasket between the body and the outlet. Optionally, an orienting section is provided for insuring that the cap is coupled to the container in only one certain orientation, so that the likelihood of cross-contamination of material within the barrels due to residual material on the gasket is substantially reduced.

A barrier fabric laminate for use as a coating for a gel filled article is provided. The barrier fabric laminate comprises a fluid impermeable film and a polyurethane nonwoven web which has a friction value of less than 200 g and a fabric hand of less than 200 g. The polyurethane web is formed of fibers of less than about 50 .mu.m on average and preferably is formed with a fluorochemical melt additive by sequentially melt blowing the polyurethane web on a heated collecting drum and laminated by a nip formed by a heated nip roller and the collecting drum.

A ceramic optical fiber ferrule is constructed from CaTiO.sub.3 (calcium titanate) or CeO.sub.2 --ZrO.sub.2 (ceria-zirconia). The ferrule is PC-radiused and thus includes a first, convex end having a predetermined radius of curvature, a second end, and an axial bore which joins the first and second ends. An optical fiber can be fixedly positioned within the bore and a terminal end of the optical fiber can be created by standard polishing or grinding techniques which is coplanar with the first, convex end of the ferrule.

A corneal prosthesis including an optical element having an optically transparent central portion and an anterior surface capable of supporting a layer of epithelial cells, the optical element being made of optical material having water content between 50% and 90% and a tensile strength greater than 20 kg/cm.sup.2, and a porous outer skirt secured to the periphery of said element, said skirt being sufficiently porous to permit cell ingrowth and tissue attachment. Also disclosed are methods of making, seeding and using corneal implants having epithelial layers thereon and porous implant material of a coherent mass of randomly oriented fibers having an interconnected network of pores.

A brush segment for mounting on a slotted support structure is presented. The brush segment generally comprises: a substrate; a carpet of bristles mounted on the substrate in a preferred manner; and, a root system projecting outwardly from a side of the substrate opposite from the carpet of bristles. Brush segments according to the present invention are particularly well-adapted for mounting in association with longitudinal slots of a cylindrical hub arrangement, including conventional cylindrical hub arrangements. In preferred applications the substrate is formed from a pliable material which is then hardened in a preferred configuration.
