A ferrofluid composition is defined by fine particles of ferromagnetic material, a liquid carrier for dispersing the ferromagnetic material and a surfactant or surfactants acting as a dispersant. The surfactant is required to have such relation to the carrier that the surfactant has, as its hydrophobic group portion, a structure equivalent to the carrier, and the carrier is selected to be either an alkylpolyphenyl ether oil, an alkylnaphthalene oil or both. By virtue of this structural feature, fine ferromagnetic particles are uniformly and stably dispersed throughout the carrier which has low viscosity and is thermally very stable.

Members, such as bearings, gaskets, electrical conductors and the like, as well as containing coatings, made from graphite intercalated with a metal halide exhibit superior stability except when used or stored in an extremely humid atmosphere. In a humid atmosphere these members and coatings tend to swell, crack and develop a corrosion layer over time. In accordance with the present invention, however, members and coatings made from intercalated graphite mixed with from 2 vol. % to about 30 vol. % of a metal powder do not exhibit this environmental instability.

In a preferred embodiment, the component is a mixture of brominated diphenyl methanes in which R is CH.sub.2,n=O,X.sup.1 =Br,(m+n) is approximately one, and (p+q)=0.
