Provided is a process for converting an aromatic compound to prepare an iodoarene, Ar--I, and an aryl compound which is a compound wherein an unsaturated compound is bonded directly to an aryl group, Ar, which process comprises reacting a diaryliodonium salt represented by general formula (I)[Ar--I.sup..sym. --Ar]X.sup..crclbar. (I)wherein Ar is an aryl group which may be substituted and two Ar's are identical and X.sup..crclbar. is a counter ion inert to the reaction with the unsaturated compound in a solvent in the presence of a transition metal catalyst and a base or a reducing metal, said reaction being carried out at a temperature not higher than 80.degree. C. and/or by using at least one of the base, the reducing metal and the unsaturated compound in an amount not more than 1.5 times the stoichiometric amount, then separating the iodoarene thus formed, Ar--I, from the reaction mixture, subsequently coupling said iodoarene thus separated with an aromatic compound, ArH, in an oxidizing atmosphere in the presence of X.sup..crclbar. or an anion ion-exchangeable with X.sup..crclbar., if needed ion-exchanging the anion with X.sup..crclbar., to form the diaryl iodonium salt of the above general formula (I), and recycling said diaryl iodonium salt thus formed in said reaction.

The novel benzil ketal derivatives are characterized by having a structure in which an isocyanuryl-containing group is bonded to each of the two oxygen atoms of ketal. Because these compounds have a high decomposition or sublimation temperature and ability to initiate photopolymerization, they are useful as photopolymerization initiators in the production of photopolymerizable shaped articles from a molten blend of a photopolymerizable thermoplastic polymer composition.

The present invention relates to novel active compounds having a plant growth-inhibiting and herbicidal action and their preparation and to agents containing these active ingredients, and their use.The novel active compounds are saturated and unsaturated 4-membered to 7-membered ring nitrogen heterocyclic compounds which are substituted on the nitrogen atom by a phenyl radical which itself carries a trifluoromethanesulphonamido group -NH-SO.sub.2 -CF.sub.3 as a substituent. The phenyl radical can also carry other substituents and the heterocyclic structure can also be substituted. Oxo derivatives of the heterocyclic compound, in which the oxo group is preferably adjacent to the nitrogen atom, form a preferred sub-group of compounds.

The new N-[3-(3-hydroxyaryl)-2-hydroxypropyl]-imides may be prepared by reacting 3-(3-hydroxyaryl)-propenoxides with cyclic imides. These hydroxy compounds as well as their esters with carboxylic acids are highly effective in the stabilization of polymers, preferably of polyolefins, against thermal-oxydative attack. The compounds themselves exhibit a good stability against discoloration by radiation or gas fading.
