摘要: The present invention provides a narrow orthopedic casting tape which can be handled in longer lengths suitable for economical production of coated fabric products. The narrow casting tape of the present invention is knitted as a wide fiberglass fabric with at least one removable connecting yarn in the length (i.e., warp) direction of the fabric which acts to connect two narrower strips of fiberglass fabric. The removable connecting yarn is subsequently removed from the fabric by a heat treatment process which separates the wider fabric into two narrower fabrics and also heat sets the fabric. Alternatively, the removable connecting yarn may be removed from the fabric by a dissolution process. Narrow fabrics of the present invention can also be constructed of organic yarns. The present invention also provides a tearable orthopedic casting tape which has a high degree of extensibility. The tearable casting tape of the present invention is knitted as a wide fabric, preferably fiberglass, with at least one tearable connecting yarn in the length direction of the fabric which acts to weakly connect two or more narrower fabrics. The tearable connecting yarn is capable of being easily torn or slit causing the fabric to separate into narrower webs.

摘要: The present invention relates to orthopedic splinting articles and methods for forming orthopedic splints at least part way around an animal body part. The splinting articles comprise a unitary blank formed of an open-celled foam sheet impregnated with a water curable, isocyanate functional, polyurethane prepolymer resin. The blank is dimensioned to extend the length of the body part to be immobilized and to partially, but preferably not completely, extend around the circumference of the body part. Upon activation of the resin impregnated foam sheet and molding the same around the body part, an orthopedic splint is formed. The present invention further relates to the use of such resin-impregnated foam materials as walking heels or laminates betweeen casts and walking heels, as supports for orthotic devices such as arch supports for foot orthotics, and as protective coverings for animal hoofs.

摘要: Chemically-modified collagen is prepared by reacting native collagen with a di or tri-carboxylic acid halide, di or tri-sulfonyl halide, di or tri-anhydride, or di or tri-reactive active ester coupling agent. The reaction is done in a controlled manner so that the degree of cross-linking is limited. Any remaining lysine epsilon amino groups present in the coupled collagen product may be converted to ureido, .beta.-malicamino carboxyamido or sulfonamido groups by isocyanate, epoxy succinic acid, acid halide, anhydride, sulfonyl halide or active ester aminemodifying agents. The resultant soluble product when dissolved in a physiological buffer provides a viscoelastic solution having therapeutic application in a variety of surgical procedures, particularly in ophthalmic surgery. This viscoelastic solution "melts," i.e., exhibits a dramatic loss of viscosity, when subjected to temperatures of between 32.degree. and 48.degree. C. The resultant insoluble product is suspended in physiological buffer and useful in tissue augmentation. The suspension containing the insoluble product exhibits a dramatic loss in viscosity at temperatures between about 40.degree. and 70.degree. C.
