Described are high-strength materials which are degradable and resorbable in the human and animal organisms and shaped articles manufactured therefrom, such as implants, based on cured (meth)acrylic acid esters of polyfunctionally hydroxyl-terminated oligomers of lower hydroxycarboxylic acids {polyfunctional (meth)acrylic acid esters}. The invention is characterized in that said materials and/or shaped articles have been three-dimensionally cross-linked by radiation-curing and/or any other, however boron-free, free radical-initiated polymerization of the polyfunctional (meth)acrylic acid esters and exhibit a tensile strength under standard conditions of at least 10 N/mm.sup.2.

Described are materials based on a starch which has been thermomechanically digested at elevated temperatures and pressures and upon the addition of water and/or lower molecular weight plasticizers and which contains oxidatively cross-linkable alkyd resins having been incorporated in an intimate admixture. Preferably, these alkyd resins have been at least predominantly composed of key substances based on re-growable raw materials.The starch blends thus modified are suitable for the manufacture of shaped articles which in the presence of air will be reactively cured and thereupon are imparted with an increased strength, and especially an increased resistance to water.

Described is the use of physiologically compatible tocopherols and especially of vitamin E as an inhibitor against premature polymerization initiation in reactive systems capable of undergoing a free radical-initiated polymerization, which systems before and/or after the polymerization thereof are placed in tissue contact with the living human or animal body and, more specifically, are implanted into the living organism thereby. The reactive systems and the polymers formed therefrom may be degradation resistant. However, a special embodiment relates to compositions or molded bodies which are decomposed by the living organism, and especially so under time-controlled conditions. The invention further relates to surgical binder systems which are suitable for adhesion bonding endogenous body tissue and which have been based on an adhesive component capable of being activated by free radicals, said adhesive component being present in admixture with a free radical inhibitor and being characterized in that the inhibitor or at least the predominant portion of the inhibitor is vitamin E. It is preferred that the described compositions are free from physiologically unacceptable solvents or residual amounts of solvents left from the preparation process.

On a table (10), a support element (14, 15) is provided on the table leg (13) and below the tabletop (11). This support element is pivotable about the vertical axis of the table leg (13). When the support element (14, 15) is pivoted outward, it can serve as a support for a tabletop (21) and is formed accordingly. The tabletop (21) has an elongated engagement element (24) on its underside, which element upon connection positively engages the inside of a corresponding elongated recess (23) of the support element (14, 15). A table connection formed in this way is very stable, and makes it possible for the thus-formed table arrangement to be moved about practically like a rigid unit. Also, it is possible for a single person without additional help, using this connection device, to couple one table (10) to an adjacent tabletop (21).
