These systems and methods utilize improved filtration media and electronic control of the speed of the air handler to minimize the presence of contaminants in the air while optimizing the efficiency of the operation to the air handler. In one aspect, the speed of the air-handling device is controlled in response to the concentration of a contaminant in the living space. In another aspect, the speed of the air-handling device is controlled to optimize the filtration efficiency of the filtering medium. The systems and methods disclosed may be used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings, for example, in hotel rooms as well as for an entire home.

A surface discharge type air cleaning device comprises an insulating dielectric body formed in the shape of a sheet, and a discharge electrode and a ground electrode formed at one surface of the insulating dielectric body, the discharge electrode and the ground electrode being disposed in parallel with each other while the discharge electrode and the ground electrode are spaced a predetermined distance from each other. The discharge electrode has a plurality of pointed ends protruding toward the ground electrode. Consequently, electrical charge accumulation is prevented and continuous discharge is possible, even when a DC power source is used. In addition, entirely uniform and stable discharge at the surface of the dielectric body is accomplished, and therefore, the generated number of hydroxyl radicals and negative ions is increased while the generated amount of ozone is decreased. Also, discharge safety is increased, and therefore, air cleaning efficiency is improved.

An outer compartment is attached to an air duct and an HVAC unit, and a pivotally attached inner compartment supports the honeycombs and the ultraviolet light source. A first end of the inner compartment is pivotally attached to the outer component, and an opposing second end is removably attached to the outer compartment by fasteners. When servicing is required, the fasteners are removed to allow the inner compartment to pivot relative to the outer compartment to a vertical service position to allow access to the components in the inner compartment.

Methods are also provided for sanitizing heating and cooling coils of various devices such as an HVAC system, and cooling systems such as a refrigeration unit and an evaporative cooler.

The ion generator can be made in the form of a pendant using a standard 9-volt alkaline battery, which can last for several months of continuous operation.
