Abstract:
A catalyst composition and a process for hydrodealkylating a C.sub.9 + aromatic compound such as, for example, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene to a C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 aromatic hydrocarbon such as a xylene are disclosed. The composition comprises an alumina, a metal oxide, a phosphorus oxide and optionally, an acid site modifier selected from the group consisting of silicon oxides, sulfur oxides, boron oxides, magnesium oxides, tin oxides, titanium oxides, zirconium oxides, molybdenum oxides, germanium oxides, indium oxides, lanthanum oxides, cesium oxides, and combinations of any two or more thereof. The process comprises contacting a fluid which comprises a C.sub.9 + aromatic compound with the catalyst composition under a condition sufficient to effect the conversion of a C.sub.9 + aromatic compound to a C.sub.6 to C.sub.8 aromatic hydrocarbon.

Disclosed is a hydrogenation demetalization catalyst with a stabilized alkali metal, having a). an alumina carrier, b). 0.01-10.2% by weight of an alkali metal, c). 0-3.0% by weight of a Group VIB element, and d). 0-3.0% by weight of a Group VIII element of the periodic table of elements, with a pore volume of 0.4-1.3 ml/g, a surface area of 100-230 m.sup.2 /g, comprising a nonmetallic element selected from the group consisting of P, Si, B and F with the atomic ratio of said nonmetallic element to said alkali metal being 0.5-40.0. Also disclosed is a process for preparing the same.

This invention relates to a process for hydrating olefins to the corresponding alcohols in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a heteropolyacid catalyst supported on a clay support, the clay support being a hot acid treated clay. The hot acid treated clay is prepared by progressively leaching a commercial bentonite type clay with hot acid to enable the cations in the clay to be exchanged for hydrogen ions leading to a clay support of surface area greater than 50 m.sup.2 /g. By using the specific acid treated clays as support, it is possible not only to increase the space-time-yield of the process but also to prolong the life of the support thereby reducing the frequency with which the support is changed or replaced on a plant.

By using niobia as support, it is possible not only to increase the space-time-yield of the process but also to prolong the life of the support thereby reducing the frequency with which the support is changed or replaced on a plant. The process is particularly suited to producing ethanol from ethylene and isopropanol from propylene.

Isoparaffins and olefins are alkylated in the liquid phase by contact with a solid superacid such as sulfated zirconia containing heteropolyacids or polyoxoanions. High octane number blending components for motor fuel and other valuable products are obtained, with important advantages over processes using liquid acid catalysts, and over vapor phase alkylation with solid superacid catalysts.

The invention relates to an improved method of presulfurizing a sulfidable metal oxide(s)-containing catalyst which minimizes sulfur stripping upon start-up of a reactor and improves catalyst activity. The method consists of contacting a sulfidable metal oxide(s)-containing catalyst with elemental sulfur at a temperature such that said elemental sulfur is substantially incorporated in the pores of said catalyst by sublimation and/or melting and heating the sulfur-incorporated catalyst in the presence of a liquid olefinic hydrocarbon at a temperature greater than about 150.degree. C.
