A combined signal of the received data signals is received over the shared spectrum. The combined signal is sampled at a multiple of the chip rate. A channel response is estimated. A cross correlation matrix is determined using the estimated channel response. A subblock of the cross correlation matrix is selected. A Cholesky factor for the subblock is determined. The Cholesky factor is extended. The spread data vector is determined using the extended Cholesky factor, a version of the channel response and the samples. Data of the data signals is estimated using the spread data vector.

A single transmitter transmits K communication bursts in a shared spectrum in a time slot of a time division duplex communication system. Each burst has an associated midamble sequence, a receiver knowing the midamble sequences of the K bursts. The receiver receives a vector corresponding to the transmitted midamble sequences of the K communication bursts. A matrix having K right circulant matrix blocks is constructed based in part on the known K midamble sequences. The wireless channel between the transmitter and receiver is estimated based on in part the K block matrix and the received vector.

A UE system implements dynamic link adaptation by adding or changing control information to notify a receiver which timeslots and codes are currently active and which timeslots should be avoided. The UE provides synchronization such that the receiver knows which timeslots and codes the UE has used to map the coded composite transport channel onto physical channels. The UE attempts to avoid the timeslots which are experiencing transmission difficulties, while attempting to utilize the timeslots which are not experiencing transmission problems.

The present invention is a method for adjusting a timing of at least one first base station to maintain synchronization with a neighboring base station. An estimation of a timing accuracy associated with each said at least one first base station with respect to said neighboring base station is determined. For each of the first base station having its timing accuracy over a threshold, a first message to transmit a communication burst is received by the first base station. The communication burst is then received by the neighboring base station and a measurement of an estimated time difference between the first base station and the neighboring base stations in response to a second message is made. The first base station's timing is then adjusted in response to the measurement.

At least one of the data highways has an input configured to receive data from the wireless interface in selected time slots. A processor controls the transfer of data between the plurality of highways.

Methods for generating code sequences that have rapid acquisition properties and apparatus which implement the methods by processing spreading codes on in-phase and quadrature channels. A first method combines two or more short codes to produce a long code. This method may use many types of code sequences, one or more of which are rapid acquisition sequences of length L that have average acquisition phase searches r=log2L. Two or more separate code sequences are transmitted over the complex channels. If the sequences have different phases, an acquisition may be done by acquisition circuits in parallel over the different code sequences when the relative phase shift between the two or more code channels is known. When the received length L codes or the length L correlation codes used to find the phase of the received codes have a mutual phase delay of L/2, the average number of tests to find the code phase of the received code is L/4. The codes sent on each channel may be the same code, with the code phase in one channel being delayed with respect to the other channel, or they may be different code sequences.

A spread-spectrum CDMA communications system for locating remote units, and for communicating message data between a plurality of remote units and a base station. The spread-spectrum CDMA communications system includes a plurality of base stations and a plurality of remote units. A base station has a spread-spectrum modulator for spread-spectrum processing the message data, and a transmitter for transmitting the spread-spectrum processed-message data, combined with a generic-chip-code signal, from the base station to a remote unit. The base station also has an antenna, and spread-spectrum detectors for recovering message-data communicated from the remote-units. A remote-unit has an antenna, and a detector coupled to the antenna for recovering data communicated from the base station. The detector includes a spread spectrum demodulator. Also, the remote unit has a device for converting the format of the data into a form suitable for communicating over radio waves, a spread spectrum modulator and a transmitter. The base station has a range circuit, which comparers the generic-chip-code signal generated at the base station with the generic-chip-code signal received from the remote unit, for determining a range between the remote unit and the base station.
