The invention relates to a method for producing a metal base material that is provided with a sliding layer that has a thickness of more than 50 μm, said base material being used as a sliding element. According to the invention, the base material is coated with a paste of the sliding layer material that contains at least one high-temperature polymer in addition to a fluoropolymer, and the base material so coated is subjected to a thermal treatment. The paste applied to the base material contains as the fluoropolymer between 40% by volume and 75% by volume polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) or polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) with other fluoropolymers added and between 60% by volume and 25% by volume of the at least one high-temperature polymer, each based on the entire composition of the finished sliding layer. The high-temperature polymer used is selected from those high-temperature polymers whose melting point is not below 327° C., if they are mainly crystalline, or whose glass transition temperature is not below 327° C. if they are mainly amorphous.

In accordance with the method according to the invention, for the production of the plastics overlay, first of all a paste is made of a plastics dispersion and fillers. This paste is free of organic solvents and is applied to a sintered porous metal layer. The multilayer material thus produced is then sintered. Since the use of organic solvents is dispensed with, health risks and the risk of fire are reduced. Moreover, the composite materials produced according to the invention exhibit excellent cavitation resistance. In addition to conventional lubricant-free applications, such as bearings, these composite materials may consequently be used in particular in gear pumps and shock absorbers.

A composite multilayer material is described, which exhibits a relatively high specific load carrying capacity and relatively low wear. The composite multilayer material for plain bearings comprises a backing layer, a bearing metallayer (1), a first intermediate layer (2) of nickel, a second intermediate layer (3) of tin and nickel together with an overlay (4) consisting of copper and tin. The overlay (4) comprises a tin matrix (5), into which tin-copper particles (6) are incorporated, which consist of 39 to 55 wt. % copper, the rest being tin. At high temperatures, as occur in the case of plain bearings used in internal combustion engines, the tin migrates into the second intermediate layer (3) therebelow, resulting in concentration of the tin-copper particles (6).

The sliding layers predominantly consist of thermoplastic fluoropolymers. The addition of iron oxide to PTFE-based materials reduces the destruction of the sliding surface owing to the appearance of cavitation if the materials are used in the presence of oil.
