Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for producing an aqueous polymer dispersion by free-radically initiated aqueous emulsion polymerization, by polymerizing, in an aqueous medium, (a) 40 to 75 parts by weight of at least one vinylaromatic compound and (b) 24.9 to 59.9 parts by weight of at least one conjugated aliphatic diene (c) 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of at least one monomer comprising acid groups and (d) 0 to 20 parts by weight of at least one other monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, the amounts of the monomers (a) to (d) adding up to 100 parts by weight, in a monomer feed process in the presence of a free-radical initiator, with the proviso that the vinylaromatic compound is metered in under polymerization conditions in a continuous mass flow over a period of at least 120 minutes, the metering of the conjugated aliphatic diene is started at a time at which at least 5% and not more than 30% of the vinylaromatic compound has already been metered in in a continuous mass flow and optionally, the polymerization is initiated in an aqueous polymerization mixture comprising up to 5% of the vinylaromatic compound and comprising no aliphatic diene, and also to the aqueous polymer dispersions produced by the process and to the use of these as a binder, adhesive, sizing agent for fibers, for the production of coatings or for the production of a paper coating slip.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing an aqueous polymer dispersion by means of radically initiated aqueous emulsion polymerisation by polymerising, in an aqueous medium, in accordance with a monomer feed process: (a) 40 to 75 parts by weight styrene; (b) 24.9 to 59.9 parts by weight butadiene; (c) 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; and (d) 0 to 15 parts by weight other monomers, wherein the parts by weight of monomers (a) to (d) add up to 100 parts by weight, which process comprises the following steps: a) creating a template of a seed latex and 1 to 10 parts by weight monomers, based on the total monomer amount; b) starting the polymerisation at a temperature ≥80° C. in this template; and c) subsequently steadily metering monomers and emulsifier into this reaction mixture; c1) wherein at a time when 40 to 55% of the total metering time of the monomers has elapsed and 40 to 55 parts by weight of the monomer amounts to be metered in are metered in, the metering rate of the emulsifier for a period P2 that lasts at most for 30 minutes is increased to 10 to 100 times the average metering rate of the emulsifier during the period P1, wherein the period P1 is the preceding length of time beginning with the start of the emulsifier metering; c2) and at a time when 60 to 85% of the total metering time of the monomers has elapsed and 60 to 85 parts by weight of the monomer amount to be metered in are metered in, the metering rate of the emulsifier for a period P4 that lasts at most 30 minutes is increased to 10 to 120 times the average metering rate of the emulsifier of the period P1 and with the proviso that the aqueous polymer dispersion has a solids content of ≥58 wt. %. The invention also relates to the dispersion obtained according to the process, and to the use thereof as a binder, adhesive, sizing agent for fibres, for producing coatings or for producing a paper coating slip.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing foamed polymer-modified bitumen compositions and to the use thereof for the production of asphalt. The invention also relates to foamed polymer-modified bitumen compositions obtainable by this process. Furthermore, the invention relates to a process for producing an asphalt composition and to the use thereof in road applications. The process for the preparation of the foamed polymer-modified bitumen composition comprises the following steps: i) Heating and pressurizing a bitumen to obtain a hot flowing bitumen stream, ii) Injecting under pressure an aqueous polymer dispersion into the hot flowing bitumen stream obtained in step i), to obtain a pressurized flowing mixed stream of the bitumen and the aqueous polymer dispersion; iii) Expanding the flowing mixed stream, in particular to atmospheric pressure, such that the water contained in the aqueous polymer dispersion vaporizes and foams the mixed stream to obtain a foamed polymer-modified bitumen.

Abstract: The invention relates to a use of a coating layer on a paper substrate for blocking oxygen transfer through the coated paper substrate, wherein the coating layer on the paper substrate is obtainable by a process, which comprises the steps of (a) providing a paper substrate with a surface, (b) applying onto the surface of the provided paper substrate an aqueous coating mass, and (c) drying of the paper substrate with the applied aqueous coating mass to obtain the coated paper substrate, wherein the aqueous coating mass contains an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer P, which is obtainable by radically initiated emulsion polymerization of at least 40 parts by weight of styrene and 22 to 49 parts by weight of butadiene and optionally other monomers based on the sum total of the parts by weight of all monomers, which is always 100, in the presence of a first degraded starch. It relates further to a coated paper substrate obtainable with a coating mass comprising the aqueous dispersion of the copolymer P and a further saccharide, which is added after the polymerization of the monomers. It relates also to a process for manufacturing the coated paper substrate obtainable with a coating mass comprising the aqueous dispersion of the copolymer P and the further saccharide.

Abstract: Finely divided, cationic, aqueous polymer dispersion which is obtainable by emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in an aqueous liquid containing a cationic prepolymer as a dispersant, wherein the cationic prepolymer is prepared in the presence of at least one polymerisation initiator by polymerisation of (a) from 15 to 45% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising at least one quaternary ammonium group; (b) from 5 to 80% by weight of at least one optionally substituted styrene; (c) from 0 to 50% by weight of at least one C 1-12 alkyl (meth) acrylate; (d) from 0 to 10% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising an acid group; (e) from 0 to 10% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising an amine group; and (f) from 0 to 20% by weight of at least one non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomer differing from (b), (c) and (e), the sum of (a)+(b)+(c)+(d)+(e)+(f) being 100% by weight, in a first emulsion polymerisation in the presence of at least one non-ionic emulsifier, and thereafter, in the aqueous liquid containing the cationic prepolymer a second emulsion polymerisation is carried out, in the presence of at least one polymerisation initiator, of a monomer mixture comprising (i) from 10 to 70% by weight of at least one of an optionally substituted styrene or (meth) acrylonitrile; (ii) from 30 to 90% by weight of at least one CMS alkyl (meth) acrylate; (iii) from 0 to 30% by weight of at least one vinyl ester of linear or branched C1-30 carboxylic acids; and (iv) from 0 to 30% by weight of at least one non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomer differing from (i), (ii) and (iii), the sum of (i)+(ii)+(iii)+(iv) being 100% by weight, and the first emulsion polymerisation and/or the second emulsion polymerisation is optionally carried out in the presence of from 0 to 10% by weight of at least one polymerisation regulator. The polymer dispersions according to the present invention are suitable for use as sizing agents for paper, board and card board.
