A piezoelectric planar composite apparatus to provide health monitoring of a structure and associated methods are provided. The piezoelectric planar composite apparatus includes a piezoelectric electric material layer, multiple electrodes positioned in electrical contact with the piezoelectric material layer, and multiple sets of electrode interconnect conductors each positioned in electrical contact with a different subset of the electrodes and positioned to form multiple complementary electrode patterns. Each of the complementary electrode patterns is positioned to form an electric field having an electric field axis oriented along a different physical axis from that of an electric field formed by at least one other of the complementary electrode patterns. The interconnect conductors can be distributed over several electrode interconnect conductor carrying layers to enhance formation of the different complementary electrode patterns.

A system to monitor the health of the structure, program product, and associated methods are provided. The system can include multiple health monitoring sensor nodes positioned to monitor parameters of a portion of the body of the structure. Sensor elements of the sensor nodes are spatially positioned along the body of structure at related or complementary locations to form a special correlative relationship between sensor nodes. The system can also include a data collector having a transceiver positioned to gather sensed parameter data from each of the sensor nodes, and a central computer including in memory, parameter process program product adapted to analyze the sensed parameter data, correlate the sensed parameter data to infer a state of health of the structure responsive to the correlation, and to detect or otherwise determine a type, severity, and/or location of damage to or incipient failure of the structure.

A strain sensor comprises a transmitting element; a receiving element wirelessly coupled to the transmitting element; and a modulating element located on a rotating component, wherein the modulating element modulates the wireless coupling between the transmitting element and the receiving element, wherein the modulation of the wireless coupling is indicative of strain on the rotating component. A method of detecting strain in a rotating component of a rotary machine comprises wirelessly coupling a transmitting element and a receiving element; modulating the coupling with a modulating element located on the rotating component; and calculating the strain in the rotating component based on the modulation of the coupling.
