Abstract: Grease compositions containing sodium nitrite are prepared by adding to a grease at a temperature not above 150 DEG F. an oil dispersion of ground sodium nitrite having an average particle size of 5 to 40 microns. The grease may comprise a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil and a thickener such as a salt, soap, soap-salt complex, polyethylene, clay, carbon black or silica gel; preferred thickeners are formed by co-neutralisation in oil of mixtures of high molecular weight (C14 to C30) and/or intermediate molecular weight (C7 to C12) fatty acids with low molecular weight (C2 to C4) fatty acids, with hydroxides, oxides or carbonates of alkali metals, e.g. lithium or sodium or alkaline earth metals, e.g. calcium, strontium, barium or magnesium. The compositions may also include phenyl-alphanaphthylamine, polyisobutylene, aluminium hydroxy-stearate, and colloidal silica.
