摘要: There are disclosed processes for preparing biodegradable collagen-based matrices in sponge or sheet form wherein in one embodiment a collagen-based material including a collagen selected from the group consisting of types I, II and II collagens is freeze dried to form a collagen-based sponge which is contacted with a cross-linking agent selected from the group consisting of a carbodiimide or a succinimidyl active ester to form an intermediate collagen-based matrix which is subsequently subjected to conditions of severe dehydration to form the collagen-based matrix in sponge or sheet form. In another embodiment, a collagen-based sponge or sheet is first subjected to conditions of severe dehydration followed by contacting the thus formed intermediate collagen-based matrix with a carbodiimide crosslinking compound to form the collagen-based matrix in sponge or sheet form. In still another embodiment of the present invention the cross-linking agent is admixed with the collagen-based material prior to formation of the collagen-based sponge or sheet followed by processing steps of severe dehydration. In a particularly preferred form of the invention, a carrier compound is incorporated during processing to form a collagen-based matrix in sponge or sheet form impregnated with a carrier compound wherein the carrier compound is selected from the group consisting of types IV and V collagen, fibronectin, laminin, hyaluronate, proteoglycan, epidermal growth factor, platelet derived growth factor, angiogenesis factor, antibiotic, antifungal agent, spermacidal agent, enzyme and enzyme inhibitor.

摘要: Methods and devices for preventing urinary tract infections in catheterized patients are disclosed. The device may be a cylindrically shaped antimicrobial hydrogel having a central opening and a slit along its length so that it can be applied directly over a previously inserted urinary catheter. An optional locking mechanism disposed about the slit can be used to secure the antimicrobial device to a catheter shaft. The antimicrobial device has features that conform to tissues near both male and female urethral openings. The inner surface of the device is adapted to provide for releasable engagement with the shaft of the urinary catheter. In one embodiment, the device may be placed on a urinary catheter prior to inserting the catheter in a patient. Locking fittings to secure the antimicrobial device against the urethral opening may also be used. Antimicrobial agents can be incorporated within the hydrogel or coated onto its surface.

摘要: This invention provides methods, devices and kits for treating coronary artery disease, particularly “soft” or vulnerable plaque. The invention is based on the local delivery of crosslinking means to crosslink the collagen covering the plaque and other proteins that may be present at the site to stabilize the plaque and prevent leakage of thrombogenic material into the lumen of the coronary artery. In certain embodiments, catheters are employed to achieve local delivery of a crosslinking agent or ultraviolet light.

摘要: An auxiliary airway for treating obstructive sleep apnea is formed by implanting an elongated conduit beneath a pharyngeal wall of a pharynx. The elongated conduit has a proximal end in communication with a first region of the pharynx, a distal end in communication with a second region of the pharynx, and a section extending beneath the pharyngeal wall for bypassing an oropharynx region of the pharynx. The system includes a first opening in the pharyngeal wall in communication with a first opening in the elongated conduit, and a second opening in the pharyngeal wall in communication with a second opening in the elongated conduit. The system has a first anastomotic connector for coupling the first opening in the pharyngeal wall with the first opening in the conduit, and a second anastomotic connector for coupling the second opening in the pharyngeal wall with the second opening in the conduit.
