A monomer mixture comprising .alpha.-methylstyrene or 2-isopropenylnaphthalene, methyl methacrylate, and acrylonitrile is polymerized in the presence of a crosslinked polymer obtained by copolymerizing a monofunctional monomer such as .alpha.-methylstyrene with a small quantity of a polyfunctional monomer such as divinylbenzene to obtain a copolymer (C). A vinyl chloride resin composition formulated by blending the copolymer (C) thus obtained with a vinyl chloride resin and an impact strength modifier resin in a specific proportion possesses improved thermal deformation resistance and impact strength while retaining processability comparable to that of the vinyl chloride resin mixed with the impact strength modifier resin.

A composition comprising polyvinyl chloride and a novel polymer processing aid is provided. The polymer processing aid can be obtained either by blending in latex form an alkyl methacrylate copolymer (A) and a copolymer (B) comprising as its essential constituents an alkyl methacrylate, a dialkyl itaconate or an alkyl acrylate, and a diolefin, or by copolymerizing one of the copolymers in the presence of the other copolymer.The polymer processing aid thus obtained improves the processability of the vinyl chloride resin composition with less reduction in impact strength.

Disclosed herein is a stretched poly(arylene thioether-ketone) film made of a thermoplastic material which comprises (A) 100 parts by weight of a melt-stable poly(arylene thioether-ketone) having predominant recurring units of the formula ##STR1## and having a melting point, Tm of 310.degree.-380.degree. C., a residual melt crystallization enthalpy, .DELTA.Hmc (420.degree. C./10 min) of at least 10 J/g and a melt crystallization temperature, Tmc (420.degree. C./10 min) of at least 210.degree. C., and a reduced viscosity of 0.3-2 dl/g as determined by viscosity measurement at 25.degree. C. and a polymer concentration of 0.5 g/dl in 98 percent by weight sufuric acid; and optionally, (B) up to 100 parts by weight of at least one of thermoplastic resins and/or up to 15 parts by weight of at least one of fillers. In a process for producing a polyarylene thioether having high stability by dehalogenation/sulfurization reaction of an alkali metal (M) sulfide such as sodium sulfide and a dihaloaromatic compound such as paradichlorobenzene in a polar organic solvent, the haloaromatic compound is used excessively in an appropriate range rather than the alkali metal sulfide and the latter stage of the reaction or all period of the reaction is conducted under a powerful stirring condition to a certain degree to obtain the polyarylene thioether wherein the concentration of --SM or --SH groups of the polymer terminal is lowered. The polyarylene thioether thus obtained suppresses the coloration in the processing with an apparatus made of ferrous material such as extruder.

A vinyl chloride resin composition having surface smoothness comprises:(1) 100 parts of vinyl chloride polymer; and(2) 0.1 to 30 parts of a polymer processing aid comprising:(A) 10 to 100 parts of a copolymer comprising 20 to 99% of an alkyl methacrylate, 1 to 70% of a dialkyl itaconate, and 0 to 60% of a monomer copolymerizable therewith; and(B) 0 to 90 parts of a copolymer comprising 80 to 100% of an alkyl methacrylate, and 0 to 20% of a monomer copolymerizable therewith,the sum of the quantities of the copolymers (A) and (B) producing 100 parts of the polymer processing aid, all quantities expressed in parts and percentages being by weight.This vinyl chloride resin composition comprising a novel polymer processing aid not only shows an increased gelation rate, yields less ungelled particles and possesses excellent processability such as an increased elongation at a high temperature, but particularly affords a formed product of notably improved surface smoothness.

Disclosed herein are (1) a composition which is prepared by combining 0.2 to 90 parts by weight of a cross-linked polyarylene thioether having a melt viscosity of 5.times.10.sup.5 to 1.times.10.sup.9 poise, which becomes gel under melting, with 100 parts by weight of a resin consisting of polyarylene thioether, which has a repeating unit of ##STR1## as the main constituent, having a melt viscosity of 10 to 5.times.10.sup.4 poise and (2) a composition of polyarylene thioether for molding, which is prepared by combining not more than 400 parts by weight of a fibrous filler and/or an inorganic filler with 100 parts by weight of the above-mentioned composition (1), is excellent in an antiflash property, is high in a mechanical strength and a thermal stability and is easily processed on melt molding and can easily recycle its molded scraps.

C., a residual melt crystallization enthalpy of at least 10 J/g, a melt crystallization temperature of at least 210.degree. C. and a reduced viscosity of 0.2 to 2 dl/g; and (C) at least one of fibrous fibers and/or at least one of inorganic fillers in a proportion of 0 to 400 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the resin component comprising said poly(arylene sulfide) and said poly(arylene thioether-ketone). Heat-resistant articles obtained by melt-molding or forming said resin compositions and a method for the production of such articles are also described.
