The present invention relates to a composition and a method for producing hexagonally-packed mesoporous metal oxides wherein the metal oxide is selected from transition metals and lanthanide metals. The composition includes hexagonally packed metal oxide mesostructures that are resistant to pore collapse upon removal of surfactant and are thermally stable. The composition can include a surfactant complexed with the metal. Also described are methods for producing the hexagonally-packed mesoporous metal oxides. The present invention also relates to compositions and methods for producing porous metal oxides. The compositions include microporous and mesoporous metal oxides that are resistant to pore collapse upon removal of surfactant and are thermally stable. Also described are methods for producing microporous metal oxides.

A system is provided including an article having a surface and a catalytic metal atom, capable of oxidation, covalently immobilized at the surface via a plurality of covalent bonds, but being free of direct covalent bonding to the surface. In particular, the invention relates to inorganic surfaces including silica, alumina, niobium oxide, or tantalum oxide, or a combination thereof and catalytic metal atoms including Fe, Mn, Cr, Ni, Co, Ru, and Os. The catalytic metal atom, covalently immobilized at the surface via a plurality of covalent bonds, can be immobilized via bonding through at least one atom that is bonded directly to the surface. The article preferably is an inorganic, mesoporous structure, in the pores of which are covalently bonded a plurality of metalloporphyrins. In particular, the catalytic metal atom, such as iron, manganese, chromium, nickel, cobalt, rhenium, and osmium are covalently bonded to a porphyrin structure which is bonded to an alumina or silica surface via bonds between the amine groups of the porphyrin structure of the alumina or silica surface. The invention also discloses supporting the catalytic metal atom bonded to the porphyrin structure via amine groups in the porphyrin and dopant atoms of the alumina or silica surface. Dopant atoms can include niobium and tantalum atoms.

The flavonoid exists in a monomeric form or dimeric form before conjugation and remains in the monomeric form or dimeric form after conjugation. Preferably, the conjugate comprises two flavonoids. The delivery agent is conjugated at the C6 and/or the C8 position of the A ring of the flavonoid. An anti-cancer agent delivery vehicle comprising an anti-cancer agent and the conjugate is also provided.

Methods for synthesis of nanocrystalline apatites are presented, as well as a series of specific reaction parameters that can be adjusted to tailor, in specific ways, properties in the recovered product. Particulate apatite compositions having average crystal size of less than 150 nm are provided. Products also can have a surface area of at least 40 m2/g and can be of high density.Hydroxyapatite material is investigated in particular detail. Compositions of the invention can be used as prosthetic implants and coatings for prosthetic implants.

The present invention relates to a method of releasably encapsulating pluripotent embryonic stem cells in a degradable continuous polyionic fiber for tissue culture, wherein the encapsulated embryonic stem cells are able to maintain a pluripotent phenotype in tissue culture; the method comprising (a) contacting an aqueous solution of a polyanion with an aqueous solution of a polycation to form an interface between the aqueous solution of polyanion and the aqueous solution of polycation, and wherein the aqueous solution of polyanion or the aqueous solution of polycation or both the aqueous solution of polyanion and the aqueous solution of polycation comprises a suspension of pluripotent embryonic stem cells; (b) drawing a continuous polyionic fiber which comprises encapsulated pluripotent embryonic stem cells from the interface; (c) passing the continuous polyionic fiber comprising encapsulated pluripotent embryonic stem cells in a continuous process through a solution which reduces secondary complexation of the components of the polyionic fiber.

Each port is sealed with a seal and is shaped to couple to a pneumatic conduit through the seal. At least some of the chambers each have a top opening and a bottom opening. The top openings are in fluid communication with corresponding ports. The bottom openings are in fluid communication with one another through the connecting conduit, which is above the bottom openings. Selective application of pneumatic pressures to the chambers through the pneumatic conduits can transfer a liquid from one chamber to another through the connecting conduit, for example, for processing bio-samples within the device.
